Question Botswana Expert Advice needed Linyanti to Khwai

    Dear Community friends.
A few of us are planning a trip in 2017, from Kang past Nokaneng, through the Caprivi, Over the Ngoma border then past Linyanti to Khwai, 3rd bridge area and then Back to SA via Maun. So basically clockwise around the delta to Maun. This is our first Delta trip (we have done a few other Bots trips over areas such as Chobe Central Khalahari/ Kubu and Mabua)
We are a group of around 4 to 5 Vehicles, all with bush caravans, mostly conqueror companions with one Imagine Trailvan and one Kavango Vehicles are a Pajero, a Discovery and Toyota LC, Prado and Hilux.

    The issue:
We have however been advised by friends, that know the area, to avoid the section from Ngoma border to Linyanti and especially the road from Linyanti down to Khwai. Reports are that the sand is very deep, the "middelmannetjie" is very high and when vehicles approach from the front you have to get out of the road, with difficulty, and vehicles get stuck and caravans and vehicles are damaged.
There is also apparently not much to see.

    The question.
Is there anybody that can shed some light that has traveled this recently? Should it be avoided?

As an alternative we are now planning to go from Ngoma border to Kasane to Maun and approach the delta (Khwai and 3rd bridge area) from the South.
    Are there better alternatives?

I have attached one itinerary and picture

    Best regards

Towing from Ngoma to khwai will not be a major issue. You go down the one bad hill around Goha Hills. The road from Ngoma until the cut line has lots of space to pass, there are two tracks most of the way. The only issue you may have is the cut line from Goha Gate upto Linyanti. Never done that. The section of cut line from the Ngoma road to Goha gate isn't great, but if your tyres are down and you take it slowly you will be just fine.

Just try and get the latest info closer to the time about the cut line road to Linyanti.

Try go after July as then the marsh road from Savuti upto khwai will be dry and much easier to travel than the sand ridge road. I am doing this route in June, Ngoma too khwai....I will give you a report back...

Worst case scenario I would skip Linyanti and do the nights at Savuti.......in fact probably much better. Savuti is underrated, we all pass by, stay a night or 2, animals are amazing although the campsite is awful.

Thanks HooknCook. Please drop a post when you return.

We are planning to go early in July 2017 so the Marsh road might be an option then.

Perfect, I will do so. But really don't get to worried, if anything skip Linyanti and stay at Savuti. Travelling around via Kasane and Nata is a long way and boring.

Hi Tron .Have you never towed a trailer on the marsh road .I have once and never again .Also seen a few people arrive here at Dijara with broken leaf spring bolts and other problems .Even had an A frame tear ,so that is my reason for my comment .

I tow regularly on the marsh road and apart from a few sections where elephant prints dried up in mud leave some very rough ground, it is all okay if you take your time and read the tracks ahead.
Problem can be when you try to avoid some wash outs and end up in broken Mopani trunks damaging the tyres.
Mind the turning circle for the trailers when zig-zagging between the bushes.

The sand ridge road can be very demanding on engine and tyres as well as lot's of low range drive through bumpy tracks will slow you down and often there is no room for crossing oncoming traffic.

if you dont mind missing savuti and the marsh road you could find out about extreme western cutline from linyanti , i mean the one even further west than the linyanti savuti cutline. i last did it in 2008 and it was like a highway comparatively speaking - but i dont know what the intervening flowing of the channel might have done .

Blocked when water flows, and it looks very overgrown now after a few years of good rains.

Thanks for the excellent feedback to date.
Our decision is to go to Khwai and 3rd Bridge (for a few days each) via Maun (from the South) and then return via Maun and go up the Western side to the Caprivi and out @ Ngoma bridge border and the home via Kasane, Khama, Martins Drift.

We are thus avoiding the Ngoma to Savuti to Khwai.

Can anyone recommend a specific camp or site (or even a better place)?
We are planning for the following places:
    • Maun or close to Maun (cannot make Khama to 3rd bridge in one day)
    • 3rd Bridge
    • Khwai
    • Nokaneng or any place on the A35 on the west side of the delta.
    • Ngepi (Caprivi)
    • Nambwa (Caprivi)

Our group consists of 6 Vehicles with Caravans

One road I can advise you to keep clear from is the road from Kasane to Savuti. Deep sand and very taxing on the engine. My D4 temperature went into the red after 45km of deep sand, 15km/h - 25km/h and high revs and that's without a trailer.

Place we stay in Maun -> Old Bridge Backpackers. Pretty awesome place, nice and cheap, good food and great vibes! really cant fault this place

Yep, often with a trailer (Bushpig 8 leaf spring) but carefully, especially if in the dry season. Doable. That Landy of yours is too fast - use a governor or cut back on those energy drinks !
