    Part 5

    Day 3

Part 2 of A Good Gravel Road

We continued with the Orrie Baragwanath pass... and traveled on reasonable track, making some good time. We stopped for lunch on the pass, and we all reveled at the immense task it must have been to carve the pass out of this inhospitable country, with the towering mountain peaks and overgrown bush.

    The scenes were dramatic.

After lunch we soon came to the entrance of the Wolkberg Wilderness Area and entered the gate after showing the necessary permits to the Parks board personnel at the gate.

Soon after the gate the scene changed....

And we soon realised that the road, that road that was marked (TAR) on my GPS, and marked as a "GOOD GRAVEL ROAD" on Bens information... Was..... erm........ GONE!...

So we had about 3 seconds of discussion...

    "we go on..."
    " this is ok... "
    "it is still early..."
"maybe it is better after here"
"It's only 11km of trail to the Camp.."

    We chopped

    And chopped

    Sooooo we chopped some more...

    And again....

About 3 hours later and 3km we got to this:

    We looked left

    We chopped a bit...

Looked left and right.... frowned, and measured, looked up and down.. And realised that the Land Rover was not going to fit...

No matter what.... it was not going to go

Our little chain saw, bless it's soul, had a major opening scene so far already, and had earned its keep in the first 2 km of this trail, twice over already.

But it, even though it was a spunky little thing would not have the ability to saw through this more than 700mm thick old tree...

So we had another 3 second meeting:
    "We can dig..."
    "We can deflate..."
"We can Saw......" ........What? "Yes saw....... a piece of the tree, to make room for the Landy!!...."

Wrrrraaaang...tang.... tang..... The little saw went..

    And voila!

But alas!!... It still would not fit.

Stay tuned for Part 6 coming soon!!!

Andrew, could you possibly post your actual GPS tracks. I would like to compare to my trip in 2011?

    Part 6

    Day 3 and 4

The final episode of "A Good Gravel Road"

    Remember, we were stuck!

    We had nowhere to go!

We might have to turn back! We might have done more than 3 hours of bundu Bashing (BosBreek) for 3 km for nothing!

So we chatted for 10 seconds.. And sawed...

We could not saw the tree down, although that would have been against my better judgement (I have this thing for trees).. But we HAD to get past..

So we measured the Landy's width, and made space in the tree:

    .

    Jurgen helped some more....

And then there was more measuring...

But no.... it was not enough!

So we had another 10 second discussion.... Off with the roofrack!!!!!

Note how the guys are enjoying this...

    I...... rested a bit..:

I decided at that moment that I needed a full beard.. I have not shaved since then..

Soooo eventually after all the work... The Landy squeezed through!

    And the Datsun sailed through:

In some obstacles... nothing beats a Datsun!..

So after 1 and a half hours we were on our way again!

    On "A Good Gravel Road"

We kept going... Hour after hour.. Stopping, cutting, sawing... driving...

Water, Bush, Rocks... On and on... A further 3 hours and another 3 km later it started getting dark:

At this moment, having been following a barely visible trail, and mostly using a breadcrumb trail on the GPS.. We had to make a call..

And we called everyone to camp..

Now.... If all of you remember, John, left his trailer at Lekgalameetse...
They were 4 adults, and 2 kiddies with nothing...

But between all of us, I think they had more to eat, more to drink, and warmer lodgings than all of us!!!

They just had to keep saying "Genoeg Dankie!".... We do tend to oversupply, don't we?

    What a night!!!

The next morning was Monday, and most of us still needed to get back home for work that next day..

So based on the fact that some of us still had another 4 to 5 hour journey after the trail, and that the trail had taken 7 hours for 8 km, the previous day, we decided to head back the way we came...

That morning we saw how stunning our camping spot was!!!

It felt wrong to leave.... It was like all of us left something there.... and brought something back with us... We brought a longing to go back.. To once again be in the bush, the real bush!..

    I love having a 4x4!!!!

PS:!!!! That last night Bernhard and Tracy, made a bread and a spanicotta ... Right there in the bush!!! I had that with a Jurassic Steak.

The best damn meal I have ever had!
