Nice! That means there was definitely some work done to the Lekgalameetse - Mafefe road. I grew up in that area and will re-visit time and again. Beautiful... Those Makhutsi Log Cabins are great!

    Part 4

    Day 3

Part one of "A good Gravel Road"

A road to the middle of Africa

In all my years in South Africa, and while going through the schooling system, I have never heard about the Baragwanath family.

I only knew of the hospital...

We were to travel from Lekgalameetse, to the Wolkberg campsite via the Orrie Baragwanath pass and the Wolkberg Wilderness Trail... It was estimated to take us until about 16h00, and then we could set up camp and be social...

The trail and pass was maked on our GPS's, and on the trail summaries as being of "good gravel road" condition, and there were even areas classified as (TAR)...

    But.....

The last (TAR) road we encountered was to the top of the Orrie Baragwanath pass.. This 'tar" road has a neat feature. It has a tree growing in the middle of the road, and the road is built around this tree... Nice!!

I would have loved to post some pictures of this tree.... but, unfortunately I was following Jody Scheckter up the pass..... AKA John Joubert, and I only noticed the tree when John made an F1 type zip around it... With the Colt billowing diesel smoke like an Oshkosh, up the 1 in 15 hill... I had to just keep the arme Datsuns loud pedal flat, close my eyes and hoped I missed it..

At this type of incline the fully loaded little Datsun was having to work very hard... But I kept up!

Jody was now trailer free, and enjoying the freedom...
He left the trailer at the camp, with the hope of returning after doing the route... they liked the comfort of Lekgalameetse. Well... that was what he thought.

Ben took a little twee spoor overgrown road from the end of the tar, and we climbed a mountain to the top, stopped and we got out in Alaska...

Yes Alaska. It was freaking cold up there! Leeu koud!

And this is where for the first time I read about the story of Orrie Baragwanath:

This dude was cut from some tough yster!!! Why is this not a bigger story!?

But hey... It might be best if this treasure of a trail is NOT over ridden by millions of 4x4s...

From there we headed down this wonderful mountain on this "road" that we can only imagine doing on horse or donkey cart...

    This is why I bought a 4x4!!!
