Default Trip Report - Mafefe, Lekgalameetse, Wolkberg Wilderness... (Ivory Route)

    Part 1

Photo's by: Rechard Timm, Philip Grobler, Ben van Dyk, John Joubert, and Bernard Enslin, also by Jurgen Huysamen

    The Start of an Adventure

Early this year a group of friends tasked one of the guys to arrange a trip:

It went something like this: "Ben... Your' up, do it for us... "

Little did we know, what we were getting ourselves into.

The dates were set, the payments were done, and the excitement grew...

We chose the long weekend of the 1st of May, because of the chaos on the N1 during Easter. (We still added an additional 2 hours traversing the various toll gates though, on this very African highway)(And don't think that your E-Tag works... No it does not)

    We were 6 vehicles:

Ben van Dyk - Defender Puma (Trip leader)
    Rechard Timm - Ben's Navigator
Jurgen Huysamen and his father - Jeep Rubicon
Philip Grobler and wife and 2 kiddies - Pajero
John Joubert, wife with her sister and husband, and 2 kiddies - Colt 2.8 Diesel (With a Trailer)
Bernhard Enslin and his wife - BT50 (T6)
Myself, my wife - in my Hardbody 2.4

On Friday the 29th we all, except Bernhard congregated at the ultra city on the N1, and headed off on the N1

Soon we got off the N1, near Mokopane, and traveled the R518, R579, and this is just about where I stopped counting the townships and little villages that we passed.. We met Bernard at a garage near the ZCC community and at these co-ords we stopped and deflated: S24 16.040 E29 35.229

    Part 2

Mafefe: The Bat out of Hell

So after deflating we travelled various gravel roads through some villages, over a stream.... through some more villages... to end up at a portion of road that seemed as if they were repairing it...

It was on a steep hill, just wide enough for a 4x4 and very steep down...and.......the road stopped.. Right there on the steep descent...

Now remember.... John had 4 adults, two kids, and a fully loaded Echo trailer....

It caused some pushing and shoving.

And eventually we had the thing out!..... Well I waited until all was done, and then shouted that if they needed any help, they must just say so!...

    But, what a beautiful place!!!

We eventually found our way, blocked some cows, upset some villagers, and on we went...By this time we had been travelling for 6 hours (Well, I have been) and we were getting lekker moeg...

On we went, From this point it was 16 km of bouncing rock strewn trail/tweespoor at an average of 12 km/h... Nothing major though.... but in the wet it would be different story....

We found these markers all along the trail, and wondered what had made these scratches on the signs.. one of the woman said that it must be a big cat... Maybe:

Eventually.... we made it. Mafefe camp.... Nice and cosy with a good kitchen, clean and wonderful beds.(these beds were very good quality)

    Two issues though:

The showers (only one had a sort of warmish water) the other was cold..
The loo... Only one was working (And we were 18 people)

My swambo, was not impressed and found it difficult to use while the queue, was playing audience outside...

This upset her....... slightly. (for some reason)

But I think her state of mind was created by the companion we had during the night.

We had a bat in the rondavel !!!

She didn't really mind that at first, and the rondavel was free from mozzies..... but..... During the night it shat on her....

I giggled.... she shouted... Oh well... sh$t happens...

    Part 2 Continued:

When we arrived at the Mafefe camp we met up with a couple who were busy installing solar panels in the camp.... They were driving a Disco4... But, more on this later...

During the night, I twisted my ankle, and seem to have torn some ligaments.
I seem to be creating a habit of injuring myself on the first night of our trips.....

    Part 3 coming up soon!

For Mafefe bookings speak to the people at African Ivory Route.(Name of the company)

For Lekgalameetse bookings go to golimpopo.com. Good luck, its a mission to book here..

Wolkberg campsite you can just rock up and pay the guy there.

Price depends on what you book and how many people you are. We were 14 people and it came to less than R500 per person for the 3 nights

    Part 3

    Day 2

    The Comfort

We got up at Mafefe Camp, wiped the Bat bollie out of our eyes, made brekkie.. And claimed our time on the loo... Well some of us did.

There were these two guys who seemed to hang around the toilet the whole time... You had to be sly and get them away to be able to get a chance!...

I wake early, so I was showered (cold) and shatted very early...

My new little gas stoofie was getting a thorough workout!

We packed the 4x4's bundeled the wives into them... some kicking and screaming ... and..:

    Then we set off:

We drove from Mafefe to Lekgalameetse.... Its not far, or difficult but absolutely stunning!

You go from high on the escarpment down through the kloofies into the jungle like forest of the Lekgalameetse Nature reserve..

Beautiful, with many river crossings, narrow little trails and very sharp turns.

Although I viewed the trail as easy, it is by no means simple, and it requires a steady knowledge of your vehicle's abilities.

We found the couple with the D4... and work trailer, the couple who were doing the solar installations on the Mafefe Camp.... They had broken down.

    No....... Not the D4!!!

The trailer ripped its tow coupling off. But being a Landy man.... he had a spare!!! Can you believe it!!!

So he drilled, we watched... took phodies of the jungle..... He bolted... (We had extra bolts)......We made funny comments about Landies (Ben glared at us)..... and he tightened the coupler back onto the drawbar, and off we went.

EDIT: Remember that John was still towing his camping trailer through all this.... this jungle!!!

I definitely have a massive respect increase for the Colt, the trailer, and for John's 4x4 abilities!!

Then all of a sudden you are there... The camp is carved out of the jungle, and seems impossibly, ummm.... civilised.

Some of the guys stayed, and rested, the others went exploring

Nice electricity, warm, soft beds, a stove, fridge, and a warm shower...

We were preparing to congregate to braai, when it thundered and lightninged..

So.... I ripped out my little stoofie, and my teenie Weber... Maar braai sal ons braai!

We ate lekker but the beds were calling!!

We were in bed very early! and slept like royalty!
