The Weber Q is not only superb for preparing steaks, a host of other dishes can also be expertly prepared in there. To answer your question, imagine an oven without a device to tell you how hot it is. Weber Q bakes brilliant breads providing you control the heat. Pizzas, pork belly, roasted leg of lamb, smoked chicken or short rib are but a few of the dishes that is bound to flop without a thermometer. In fact, the ones without thermometers have much lower domes, which in any event prevents one from preparing dishes standing a little high, like a whole chicken.

Get the Q2200. Thermometer makes the world of difference and for 4 you'll be happy with the additional space. We have the Q1200, great for two of us, space pressure is on when preparing food for 4, and the thermometer is used every time I use it.

Johan, I have baked many nice breads in my Q, always with the indirect heat method. I have tried your way with the same pot, and burnt the sides. How do you get the sides so nice? How hot do you set it, and for how long? I set mine on the lowest setting and still burn the sides.

I immediately baked another bread in an ordinary pan. Here is the result, accompanied by a bird, also done in a Webere Q.

I have been thinking about this. Seeing that my situation is a family of 5 and that I will be using this at home for at least 90 - 95% of the time, will the Q3000 not be the better purchase for my needs.

Also considering that currently I can get the Q2200 for R6,000 and the Q3000 for R6,600?

Dammid R6,600 is a lot of money for something that I do not NEED. This will always be a luxury

The Q300 has two independently controlled burners, it makes cooking more infinitely variable. At that price it is a no brainer, and when people come over you have the space.

When you learn how to cook on it you will never look back.

Is the weber trivet the only one you can use or is there alternative trivets/racks and roasting shields that you can buy for the Q's?

I use the Weber trivet, which cost an arm an a leg. My son in law uses a similar size trivet from their kitchen which his wife used to cool baked stuff on. It works just as well.

In fact, I have home made trivets half the size of the standard one allowing me to cook dishes requiring different het treatment simultaneously.

For best results with wors I turn the trivet upside down to prevent the skin touching the grid, otherwise the skin get seared and break, leaking the juices.

Is it nessesary for the three sided brush and the stainless steel tool set, the braai tongs and the spatula, or what tools and brush can one use?

Also how long does the drip pans last before you should get replacements? I guess you can extend this by putting foil over the drip pan?

Firstly, I will not touch an enamelled grid with anything steel. I use a wooden spatula cut to the shape of the grid bars and a pot cleaning sponge with soap and hot water. But then, I also do not clean my stainless braai roosters over a fire - I wash them, and after many years they still look like new.

As far as braai tools, I use a pair of braai thongs, a plastic type egg lifter and a silicone paint brush. That is all.

I do not even bother with foil in the drip pans. I simply empty them and rinse with boiling water when I think it is time. I have never replaced mine.

I use folio "container" from West Pack for the drip. To prevent is flying out (Q300 is used at home) I have stone inside. Those folio things are cheap. I have never bought the Weber make. There is very small size difference.

For cleaning high pressure cleaner is not too bad. I had bit of a fire and Weber fixed Q300. (Insurance paid) I do not know what chemical they used but braai was like new. Please make sure your gas pipe is in good condition.

I was thinking (I tend to overdo these kind of things) about lining the inside with foil to help with cleaning. Glad I did some googling. It's amazing what stupid things can go wrong, like the guy that didn't pierce holes in the foil under the trivet. I would not have thought about holes in there as well.

You may. The Q220 lid and thermometer was about R 900 when I bought it.
