    Default Groenkloof safety situation

    Hello all,

I am sure some of you know of Groenkloof Nature Reserve in Pta, there is not only a 4x4 trial, but also fantastic mtb and walking / trial running routes, a really nice picnic & braai area, great stock of wildlife, nothing else like it in GP.

There has been a serious deterioration in the security situation to the point where a lot of of regulars have stopped going. Cyclists / runners / walkers getting robbed / assaulted with threats of rape and death. I am not sure if any of you in your skoros on the trials has witnessed this or know about it, but you will agree that it is fantastic public space asset. There are also rumours about it being 'developed', there has also been a recent change in management which is a part factor in this situation.

There is a petition to the Mayor going

What a pity and yes it is a nice venue right on our doorstep..........The well known Johan Badenhorst from Voetspore used to say "the minute I left SA we feel safe"

Crazy. It was one of the last safe, inner city wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Ive been there countless times for hiking, 4x4ing, a braai, etc.. One has to consider that we are perhaps all targets of opportunity when doing what we love. Time fight back? How.

At least please sign the petition and encourage others to, and try attend the public meeting, and we will take it from there.

There is a Friends of Groenkloof group, not sure what their POA is, there has been volunteers to help patrol. I will try keep this thread updated, we really need to pull together here.

Always a perceived safety. It was the same with the robberies at hennops 4x4 trail. Do not go alone. Be armed. Be vigilant. And stay away till the operators do something about it.

Did the trail mid day yesterday. Only encountered one vehicle on the route and the picnic area had only a handful of people.
Best to be alert and try not to travel alone. No maintenance being done on route, so choose your line carefully.
