Default Out of date/ Incorrect maps on my Garmin 2589LMT

I bought myself a Garmin 2589LMT over a year ago specifically because I wanted a GPS with T4A capability.

I find it works very "different"/ difficult from my TOMTOM I had which supposedly should be an almost entry level GPS.

I navigated at the end of 2014 to St Lucia and back and on multiple occasions it wanted to route me through non existing roads or through someone's farm or similar and I know for sure the GPS was not set to T4A unless I am mistaken, although I understand that a GPS is just a navigation tool I couldn't understand why it was doing it and put it down to myself possibly not setting it up properly or routing it properly.

However on Wednesday the 27th april 2016 I went down to the Drakensberg with the wife to get away for 2 or 3 days and while down there I looked for some attractions, found the sterkspruit falls which I found on T4A and again the same thing happened, again it wanted me to go through someone else's property to get to my destination and when ignoring the instruction to turn off it recalculates and I eventually did get to the falls after having to turnaround and using my tablet to help with the route.

Can anyone tell me if this is actually a setting I must check or is there something wrong with my maps or Garmin for that matter.

If maps how does it get fixed.
    If unit how to fix.
If me sorry there is no fix

Please help with some ideas where to look.

Are you routing though Base Camp?

If you route with Garmin maps on your PC and then have your GPS set for T4A or vice versa
    weird things can happen.

The first long distance trip I was obviously a newbie and didn't even know where to find the T4A attractions which comes standard so I didn't use that function at all, but just the general routing to get to your destination part staying on the main roads as we were travelling in convoy and we couldn't do gravel roads or anything so my choices were to avoid tolls which is my standard choice and to avoid gravel. On this trip sprecifically at one stage it wanted me to climb a wall of approximately 4m and I could see that there was no evidence of any roads previously.

The second trip I specifically chose the item listed under the T4A option as an attraction and it did take me on roads but eventually I had to turnaround in front of the Drakensberg lodge and reroute with my tablet.

I am not using computer or any such device just straight the GPS itself also trying not to make the navigation too difficult, like choosing fastest or avoid tolls or such I don't even navigate by specific points or roads, so in theory it should be easy.

    Explain Base camp.

I ususally just say on the front screen whereto and from there either add an address or coordinates and calculate. My settings are basically always standard.

There are two other Base Camp settings fastest and shortest which can also lead to big differences in routing.

I was fighting Base Camp to route on gravel roads this weekend till I realised my setting were wrong..

Overall even with the latest maps I do use the GPS as a general guide. One can find tracks, roads and railways suddenly appearing to block your programmed route!

Always have a paper map handy as backup..

And if You have a tablet Google maps is excellent!

What I have seen is that my standard avoidances setup has nothing as standard avoidances so the GPS is free to use whichever road to take to get me there by my choice for instance fastest or shortest time.

What I don't understand is that it would actually show to turn off on a "road" which doesn't exist.

Well I had an urgent appointment and it wanted to take me across two railway lines! There was no road.

    I had to detour!

I would've detoured as well, the last time I made a railway crossing at a non designated crossing I got stuck and my bakkie written off.

I am very baffled by this occurrence maybe someone from Garmin could explain this or someone on the forum who has found the answer to this riddle.

I was having a similar issue. A couple of months ago I updated the maps using Garmin Express and since then ( touch wood) all is good.

+1 on Garmin Express. It will update your maps as weĺl as your software. I regularly update mine and it is working very well.

Check that your unit is not using two map sets simultaneously. As suggested update with Garmin express first.
Get the latest T4A mapset if you are using offroad or lesser roads especially otherwise the latest Garmin mapset.

I have checked that there are 2 sets I think maps on my GPS and hope someone can confirm or deny this.

The sets are under Mymaps and called the following

    CN Southern Africa NT
    2015.40 Foursquare

    CN Southern Africa NT
    2015.40 ALL

Are these the same thing or not

I have used Garmin for a long time now and no longer get surprised when I get routed through a private farm or down a non- existent road. Have a look where you get routed if you want to go to Cape Agulhas it directs you to the center of Bredasdorp. I always take paper maps as well
