Post Hello! and some bush camping site tips needed

    Hi all
My other half has perused this site for years and we have often used your suggestions and ideas in our trips.

I'm the accommodation finder, he's the journey planner, I am the chef and packer, he's the GPS and safe driver, and we are the best fireside campsite, road-trip companions.

Its a true case of Sandton Kugel by week, bush-baby by weekend and any holiday I can possible escape to. Just give me a head torch, the bush, and a fire and I could not be happier. Mother earth sings to my soul.

In saying that, I am constantly on the hunt for real bush-type camping sites, but with very strict requirements, as I cannot stand over-packed camping grounds where there is no respect for the solitude of pure darkness filled with star-lit night skies, swimming pools over-flowing with unruly and noisy individuals. If the camp sites allows DSTV dishes, has a shop, caters for rugby-mad guests, I am OUT. Getting that off my chest, and moving along...

I would love to get input and ideas, suggestions on camp sites that are simple -
    • Don't mind rustic - solar, gas, donkey, borehole water
    • We have solar panels so electricity is not a priority
    • bush camping means you feel as if you are in the bush, away from everything, no lighting, quiet, peace, animals, opportunity to walk/cycle/hike/run (if its safe, I don't feel like outrunning a large cat!)
    • Restrictions of number of people and vehicles per site, and no more than 10 sites - the more limited the better
    • looking for special spots 1-4 hours out of JHB (especially warmer spots for winter camping)
    • Real solitude of bush camping without the clutter of everyday life.
Look forward to any ideas that you have.

p.s. we drive a really old Prado that's done many a mile, seen many adventures, and prefers the road less travelled , as its allergic to tar.

There are some great spots hidden away in the Waterberg. Bontle campsite in Marakele National Park is quite big, but has a very rustic feel to it, and should be fairly quiet out of school holidays.

Love Matamba and have been often!
Been to Bontle too. Had such an amazing experience with the rhinos joining us for sundowners one evening - truly magical.
