Default Rebuilding a Defender Series lll Double Cab

I got a deal on a broke down Series 3 Land Rover Defender Double cab for R7500 and just couldn't look the other way. So I set out to build an Overlanding vehicle that I wouldn't feel bad to put through obstacles. I will be posting updates of what I already completed and then as the project comes along

I received the Landy with a lot of incomplete parts, random parts on the back, an engine block on the front seat and incomplete diffs

After some research, I decided that I will be replacing the old diffs with Land Cruiser diffs. With some patience I managed to get a set of diffs for R15500 including the leaf springs and both brakes being disk brakes

Since the inside looked the worst, I decided that I will start with the chassis and suspension and all the mechanicals as the major priority, as it was also the place where most of the money will be spent. First things first, clean the cruiser diffs and repaint them.

    Nice project.

LC axles are a good choice, MUCH stronger than most Series axles.

Disk brake conversion would have cost around R10k just for the front anyway.

Good engine choice on the S3 R6 is the Nissan RD28 diesel. There are gearbox adapters available from Giloeng and the engine is reasonably priced from Engines and More.

The other options are one of Isuzu 4J turbo diesels (4JB1T or 4JG2T): conversion kits are available from the UK. The kits include adapter, engine mounts, clutch kits and spigot bushes.

Next part I will be doing is the engine bay area. Fixing the steering arms, cleaning the chassis and repainting it and refitting the diffs. Once done, I will post the pics

While you're busy, install an LC power steering box.

With all due respect, that front grill is a 110, not a Series 3.

Very much a hybrid if you ask me.

I don't know of a Series double cab. The wheel arches say Series, as does the windscreen. Body looks like a 109" station wagon. But the bonnet and grill is defender.

Does the back of the cab look factory or modified afterwards?

Looks like a 109 R6 Station wagon that got the back cut off

    Hey Guys

I'm about to get (another) Series 3 Stationwagon, this one an R6....I never knew these came in a doublecab

Is there a possibility of doing the conversion to a Doublecab FROM the wagon??

    I'm watching this rebuild intently!
