I would say every 4x4 is suspect to uncontrolled rolling on the dunes.

Are you saying that the Prado can do the trip better /easier than the Discovery?

Is that based on your experience of driving a Discovery and Prado in the Namib dunes?

no it is based on the OP's questions and what needs to be done to get the disco to do what needs to be done. vs the prado which should be able to take him there and back without needing mods. but ja not my monkey not my circus.

Well I think that spending R20K to upgrade a car which you've already bought to take on such trips is preferable to borrowing somebody else's car to do said trip. That's R20K if he upgrades the tyres, less if he doesn't.

BTW that fuel tank on the Prado is a big plus point. Can't believe that LR thought putting a 80l fuel tank on a thirsty V8 is acceptable...

I would also prefer to upgrade my own car.(sounds so hectic but is actually only a long range tank and some discoeast rods - R8500 in total)

I would however take the Toyota if I didnt have the money or didnt want to fit a long range tank to my car rather than carrying fuel in 6 (?) Jerry cans. I dont mind 1 or 2 jerry cans but not that many.

But having said that I know I will be disappointed if I were on a trip like that using another vehicle and not my own.

Gosh, seems I have sparked quite a debate.

After all the people I have spoken to (Uriadventures, Landyworx, DiscoEast along with the posts on this forum) the general impression I get is this.

In their experience, both the Disco and the Prado will make this trip without any modifications at all. The only consideration is carrying 250 litres fuel and the tour operators are willing to carry some on my behalf for a small fee. So problem solved. Even taking the Prado I would need to carry 4 extra cans with me.

Modifying the Disco would only really serve to scratch my own itch and pander to my enthusiasm to get the most out of the vehicle. Opinion from everyone is that if I did do all these mods (LR tank, suspension rods, 18" rims) to the Disco it would be superior to the Prado in performance and thus no longer serve as a valid comparison.

I reached out to 18inchoffroad and he doesnt have any stock and wont be importing anytime soon due to the exchange rate.

Contacted Compomotive directly and got this response

    Thank you of your message

Yes we can offer you the special 8x18 PD1881 to suit the Land Rover Discovery 4

Ouch!!! R30k and that is without R15k worth of rubber still to be put on.

Thus close to R50k for wheels....mmmm.

As I said before, you can buy a hell of a lot of 255/55/19's for that money!

I also spoke to Peter at LandyWorx. He has actually decided to fit some 30mm spacers and a set D4 XS 18" rims to his Disco 4. He recons that would be a far cheaper solution. The concept has been discussed quite a bit on the forum already. Seems to come with +'ves and -'ves. He does have to shave down the cooling fins on the calipers to make it fit.

Seems like a bit of a stretch to me though considering I would probably reach my own limit long before I reached the limit of the 19" rims. To your point Regard I could just buy a lot of 19" tires for the same price and just run them at a lower pressure with a higher chance of damaging them.

the issue is, most rural places will not have this tyre size, so you will have to wait or fork extra for courier costs.
