    Default Defender universal joints

Fitted GKN universals to front and rear prop shafts about 10 000 km ago and there is a bit of play and vibration again. It's the first time I come across joints with no grease nipples. I've had a front shaft come apart on me before on the N2 without more warning than a very slight vibration and then BANG!!! KLUNK!!! THUD THUD THUD THUD THUD until I came to a very quick stop. Knocked my feet clean off the floor board and the floor was about 50mm higher than normal. Luckily it didn't smash the gearbox.

What make of joints do you guys recommend I use and where is the best place to have the shafts balanced in the Western Cape?

A prop coming loose is a propperse trainsmash, not a nice feeling at all.

I suggest Spicer if you can find them.

As far as I can pick up with my search Spicer no longer make joints for the Defender. It was the 3100 part number and is no longer in production. Bummer!!

Read this https://www.landroverexpedition.com/...t-differences/ then search for the GKN HD units.
    Search for part number TVC100010G.

Thanks Mike N. The info you posted is extremely helpful. Sent my shafts to Colin at Propshaft Engineering and tomorrow i'll ask him to get me the HD units. Thanks a mill.

My Defender also eats universals. It broke the front prop last year while I visited Slaapstad and 2 weeks ago I had to replace one Universal on that same prop. Done about 18k km on it. Also fitted a new rear prop a month ago. A contributing factor may be the auto lockers - ATB front locker and Detroit rear locker...

Jip. Ashcroft is so good. Insides is about double the strength of the Detroit Truetrack. The Truetrack has 3 spiral gears where the ATB has 6.
