The only advice I can give is to travel as light as possible. You do not need tons of equipment loaded on the roof rack or a vehicle loaded to the gills. I suspect a significant number of breakdowns are related to overloading.

I would stay at Ramabantla the night before and arrange for extra unnecessary kit to be stored there

Only go with good friends who are not short tempered when the going gets tough. I don't enjoy people turning @$$ hole.. Unless the ladies can rough it with the guys, leave them at home. There are no trees, and very little brush to use as toilet hides.


Go as slow as possible. If you don't make the obstacle without charging it, pack more rocks or you'll pick up lots of damage. You won't have to go searching for rocks to pack. It is freely available.


ANY 4x4 can do Baboons. Not all drivers can.


8 Baboons outings and I broke a (very worn) CV once.

This will definitely be a men only trip. And we are all good mates. Most of us not to hot tempered .

And we will take it easy. I have hiked the whole burg in one go 9 days. And that thought me not to just run through something. But actually enjoy were you are.

We planning on taking some rock packers / handlangers with.

After this trip I know one or two of us will be keen to do it again. Then id like to try it in snow or in the rainy season. The snow does look very hectic

We are planning to do Baboons in first week of October 2016. Thanks for all the great posts of those that has been there - helps a lot with our planning.


Have anyone done the track from Semonkong to Mantsonyane (68 km) and are able to advise on how long that will take us. We might want to fit that in on our way to Baboons pass.

We did end up going. Just stoped using 4x4 forum for all the communication. Really one of the best trips done so far extremely buetifull.

Baboons can be from fairly simple to a nightmare. You only need rain and snow. And then throw a broken vehicle in the mix where you cant pass.

We went September last year, I'll bump the thread for you with some pics. We had no damage.

We were 3 4x4s that went and a bunch of friendly and willing rock packers ha ha
* Rubicon 33" tyres
* Triton 33" tyres
* Isuzu 31" tyres.

All the vechile were lifter and had proper underbody protection. Which is a must for that trip. All were lwb and is our dailys.

None of us sustained damage but we all took shots on the rock sliders. And I nicked the point of my exhaust on a rock. But noting major.

The difficulty is really gonna depend on your own experience and how modified your vechile is.
Basically ground clearance is whats gonna make the trip take long or short as well as how careful you gonna drive it.

The first part isnt really ruff in my opinion but the second part is proper fun.

We took our time on the trip walked almost every difficult section before driving them took photos and just soaked up the beautiful Maluti mountains. And that really what I enjoyed most.

We basically finished Goliath rock on the second day. But it definitly possible to do it in a day. But you gonna probably just drive the whole time. And to mee thats a bit pointless.

Tips..... Pack rocks if you need to. And dont take to much stuff. Too much stuff is just more weight you have to haul over those rocks. And make sure you go with a good group of people's.

But i also don't think its the craziest thing out there to drive.

Also dont be a Panzi and drive around the difficult sections. Coz that is why your driving babboons and not sani pass. And if it looks like a rocky section then its the road.

To all that plan to go up before the 28th. Please pack enough rocks and leave them there. Then we do not have to work that hard.
We are two vehicles that plan to start on Friday the 28th and be out on the 29th. Will take it extra slow as the other vehicle is a standard Defender. All he have is bigger tyres.

We did the pass twice in two days with Isuzu 300 dtec. Solo. First day 8h and next day 6h. Had to use the winch and HL jack sometimes.

We did Baboons 3 times in 3 days. First day 4.5 hours with standard Foton Tunland, next day whole day with journalists, camera men and Lat Wiel presenters and the 3rd day in 15min up and down in a Bell Jetranger.
