Default Caltex Delo 400 in Cape Town

Please can anyone in Cape Town help me. I live in the Simonstown area and I am having trouble trying to find Caltex Delo 400 at a "sensible" price. The only local place I can find it at is the Caltex dealer in Fish Hoek, who wants R190.00 for 5 litres! I have been using this outlet for a while now but the old finances are biting a little..............

Do any of you know if it is possible to get it cheaper in the Cape Town/Southern Suburbs area? Am I getting uptight for nothing or must I accept that R190.00 or around that is the price to pay?

My alternative is Shell Rimula of which I know nothing about but I was not aware that 2 types exist, a "black - R150.00" and a "silver - R178.00" I assume the silver is Shell's equivalent of the Delo 400. This oil seems to be much easier to get hold of. If any one has experience of Rimula, which one should I go for?

my opinion - get any brand of oil that matches or betters the specs, but is locally available.

For example, I use Bison oil, which is a CI-4 spec, while delo is a CH-4. Delo Gold is better than Delo 400. Look at the spec and decide.

    Not.

    Delo Gold:
    API CH-4, CF or SL

    Delo 400 Multigrade:
API CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, SL, ACEA E7 or
    JASO DH-1

API spec is the minimum spec one should look at. There are other things to look at as well.

My thinking, but I may be wrong altogether!

I agree 100%, there are a number of parameters that need to be considered.

But to me the primary function of motor oil is to lubricate, and lubrication is most critical on start up i.e. what is the viscosity at room temp (40 deg C in the lab). Typically, I look at viscosity at room temp, as well as viscosity index.

Benchmark is Delo Sports Fully Synthetic 5W40. Gold and 400 are 15W40. I use fully synthetic as the benchmark and added Delo Sports Synthetic Blend (15W40) as these two are the only 2 oils that are recommended for High Performance pick-ups and 4x4s.

    Delo 400 @40 deg C = 125
    Delo [email protected] deg C = 115
Delo Synth [email protected] deg C = 112
Delo Full [email protected] deg C = 96.6

    Viscosity Index
    Delo 400 = 125
    Delo Gold = 137
    Delo Synth Blend = 140
    Delo Full Synth = 172

Assuming the same additives are in each oil to improve the wetting angles on steel and alumimium, and similar shear strength exists, the Gold will offer better lubrication at start up which is at room temp.

    Any comments?
