Thanx for all the info. Drove thru again today. Quite a few repairs done to road since my last visit in 2014, when there were sections of road broken away, quite scary then.
But the E Cape side still overgrown to single lane on parts.
Magnificent drive, great to stop at the bottom bridge and relax.

Sadly the EC refuse to spend any cash on it despite numerous requests.......

Earliest recollection of driving through the pass is from early 70's when we drove down from Transvaal to Cape Town via PE.

Going through Bloukrans we were met with motorbikes on their way to the Buffalo rally, sweeping at speed around those tight corners...

Drove it today as well. Wow. What awesome scenery. Watch out for Boomslange, baboons and buck along the way. Can't believe it's not used. Must be one if the most scenic drives I've taken.

We make a point of driving the pass every year while camping at Storms River. We did the pass last week Monday. Indeed beautiful. Take along a swimming costume if you do the pass on a warm day. There is a very nice easy access swimming spot at the bottom of the pass. Amazing to see the difference between the Eastern Cape section and the Western Cape section in terms of maintenance. The EC side is becoming a bit of a nightmare with barely one lane left and overhanging trees coming down lower and lower...

Is there not a group of civil engineering companies that want to start a NGO to maintain these routes. Even if it only becomes a gravel road again. Have done it just before it was closed and drove past the "closed" signs many times and wonder if I should not just take a chance. Insurance will probably not cover you if something happens though.

It's only closed from the PE side, open from Natures Valley.

    Urban legend perhaps?

Where do you get your info? This road was closed purely because of the new bridge and the fact that no-one wanted to clear up the old rock fall on the EC side...I doubt there is any evidence of an imminent catastrophic road collapse. This road has been closed for ... eish... I cannot even begin to think HOW long! and it has not yet slid down the into the gorge...
