What I am noticing is a slight change in engine tone (almost roughness) when my aircon is on under certain driving conditions. I have repeatedly reported this to dealer, but according to them nothing is wrong.

The aircon on my 6 month old fortuner has packed up. The dealers say that 2 pipes are leaking and will have to be replaced (fortunerately under guarantee). Apparently they have had similar problems with at least 2 other fortuners. Anyone have a similar experience?

Yes - I know exactly what your talking about - specially when accelarating hard it sound like there is a different exhaust on the car for a couple of seconds. Apparently it is normal. I quite like the harsher sound, but must admit that it may become annoying on longer trips if it stays like that.
Everything is a hammer.
Unless it is a screw driver.
Then it it a chisel.

You are the first person to confim similar experience! Makes me feel much better.
It is very anoying when you tow long distance, on ever uphill it comes and goes. I went to Namibia earlier this year, and it made me go nuts. I am at the point where I am considering selling by Fortuner as result of this.
Are you sure it is normal? Does not sound healthy to me.

Hi B,
I certainly feel better now that I know others experience the same noise. What I find strange though is that not all Fortuner owners experience the same, and mine is much too prominent not to be noticed.
Not sure if it can be the aircon compressor, because it only occurs when you encounter an incline at high speed (i.e. 130kph).
My service manager told me that there are 3 injection stages, and the sound is associated with the 3rd. This does not sound correct to me, as it never happens when the aircon is not on.

Glad in some ways that it isn't only me.
My FT D4D 4.4 has 7000km on the clock.
I have been concerned (and embarrased with colleagues in the car) by a very harsh noisy vibration that always seems to kick in whenever under load ...120Km/h accellerating uphill ....
I first noticed it as it sends a vibration/grinding feeling via the accelerator pedal (at the same time being very noisy) right up my leg.
To me it definately seems to be the aircon as switching the aircon off causes the noise and vibration to stop immediately. Switching it back on brings it straight back.
It also comes and goes for differnet periods as something in the engine automatically switches whatever it is off and on.
If you are cruising / not accelerating hard then it doesn't seem to be an issue.
I was going to report it at my 10000km service.
Please let us know if anyone finds a cure for this, it is very frustrating.
PS: Is it particular to the D4D diesel model or are any of the 4.0 crowd having the same thing ?
Cheers
Peter
I have been complaining about this from the time I had the car, but could not get any solution from the dealers thus far.
See the below quote from a year-old message by me:
I suspect that is is only an unlucky few that experience this, because I ask every F owner I bump into, and no one so far confirmed a similar experience. It was only later that I realised it only occurs when the aircon is on.

I had an aircon issue on my Fortuner 3.0D4D - pipe to rear laking fluid. They replaced it under gurantee. Took 2 visiots and 6 hours of work.
Seems ok now after all the trouble I went thru. My aircon was leaking the day I picked up my new Fortuner. Where is the quality control Toyota ?
I took my F in today for its 20,000 km service (with a different dealer I bought it from), and complained about the noise again.
They just phoned to let me know that 2 of my injectors need replacement. Will be done tomorrow.
Let's hope this solves the problem. Will report back.

I discovered this noise one day (after some 8,000km) when my phone rang and I had to switch off the radio. I studied it and noted that it most evident between 120-130km/h. As a fellow forumite noted it comes in cycles as the compressor swithes on and off. The problem with these noises they are so driver sensitive. Imagine rocking up at Toyota and going for a test drive with their chaps and they say they can't hear it![]()
Hi guys,
Sorry mods for resurrecting this one.
I know this an veeeeerryyyyy old thread, but I want to know if someone has found an explanation for this. I experience the same @ +- 130 kph. The aircon compressor switches on and off at close intervals, when on the sound is a low frequnecy droning noise. Only happens at mentioned speed.
cheers
Does this AC issue only affect D4D's?
Hi Guys...
I am glad that I have found this thread...
A couple of weeks back, my Aircon just stopped blowing old air! So I took it in and The dealer had the problem sorted after having the car there for a week or so...
I then went on holiday to the Mpumalange where I noticed the same intermittent noise at highway speeds...
Has anybody found a solution to the problem? Is it the injectors or the aircon??
