    Default Passport entry stamp scam

Once again I warn all travelers to Mozambique to personally submit your passport to the entry Immigration Officer.
Before leaving the entry Immigration counter - confirm that your passport has been stamped and stamped with the correct date of entry.

    DO NOT USE RUNNERS !!!!!

This is the painful and very costly result of a young couple the came to Bilene from Durban investigating Lodges to get married in the near future.
On exit 15 days later their passports did not have a entry stamp.
Their passports were confiscated and were officially instructed to appear in front of the Matola Immigration Director.

I accompanied them to this Immigration Office and spent from 8am to 2pm to resolve and pay the fine.
2000Mt per person per day being illegal in Mozambique.
That resulted in 60 000Mt total fine.
Then each of them had to buy a visa for 855Mt to enable them to legally travel the the GOBA Mozambique exit Border.

I say again - MAKE SURE YOUR PASSPORT IS STAMPED and STAMPED WITH THE CORRECT ENTRY DATE !!
Do not use RUNNERS at any Mozambique Border to take your passport and car documents to process for a fee.

    DO ALL YOURSELF !!!

Yip and they stamp your passport under a counter where you can't see, you just hear the thump.

I always check for the stamp. When I once pointed out that he didn't stamp I was met with aggression.

Hopefully now the couple will move their planned wedding venue to RSA, costing Moz a lot more than the R20k fine.

It's a scam they judge you on the spot and decide an appriopate fine. Lots of inmiddation. If you don't have that amount of money they will take what you have .

I go often ,Refuse to use runners but will concede that we dont always double check that passports are stamped , just hear the thump and then move on.
What is concerning is that the officials are in on the scam , if I did not cross the border legally then why would I try and exit legally and present my passport to be stamped? Again a case of ripping the tourist off , and what is concerning is that all are in on this practice.
If the chief emigration officer did his job properly, made sure that his staff stamps the passport , gets rid of runner in the immigration zone , border area is supposed to be for staff travelers only , and then convict any staff member caught not doing his/ her job.
But then this is Africa, and corruption is the order of the day. It is always the passport holders responsibility to make sure the official has done his job, Craze world we live in.

    Hi Roelof

They also scam people everyday that are following the rules. Like I said they "stamp" your passport under acounter where you can't see. They take advance of out trusting nature.

Same with the runners. They dress well, wear reflective jackets and have takes around their neck making them appear like officals . They tell unsuspecting tourist to hand over their passports, without them even realizing they are runners .

They are good , they must be good otherwise they wount make living out of it.

The actual officials don't do anything about it because they are all in on it.

True and I agree, they are very adept at seeming legit. Might even have been the first time the couple crossed the border?

They should have followed the rules and checked their passports. Crossing into Moz is not that much of a headache. Just remain patient, watchful and happy

Whenever I cross ANY international border, I manually check the actual entry stamp and date. This above scenario can happen to the best of us, because Murphy.

Sad but true . I know many many people who would rather head down the South coast from the lowveld than put up with the ongoing nonsense of corruption -they just stopped going
I was getting ready for an overland trip up to Pemba then a Dow around the
Qurimbas but with Renamo taking potshots at all and sundry on the en1 I don't want to be the duck tha gets nailed in a carnival type shooting gallery convoy or not. No thanks .
And from all reports it would seem Maputo and the south is blissfully unaware of how quickly the north and center is drifting into war -they haven't felt it yet and the convoys are 100km to 300km north of the tourist areas of the south and 1000 km away from the tourist areas of the north but 250 refugees are pouring into Malawi daily if the UN HC R is to be believed
