    Default Windhoek to Gabarone

We are travel with a caravan from Windhoek (early April 2016) back home to the Eastern Cape. I have done the Windhoek / Upington / Home leg and was thinking, is there merit in driving via Botswana. I believe the road is good. Your thoughts please (Distance its a few hundred km extra, no big deal)

    I see you are desperate.
Now first the spelling, variation 3 (correct one) is GABORONE - right.

You would be driving the Trans-Kalahari hi-way which as such is quite boring (flat) but has some merit with the rains passed so it will be full of blossoms.
I like the WDH-Gobabis-Mamuno part which is quite scenic.
Mind the wildlife in the Nam side and the cattle / donkeys on the Bots side and don't drive at night.

Once you reach the Y-junction Ghanzi - Kang it is a matter of eating miles on a flat plate, so nothing spectacular apart from the wide skies and bush land.
Jwaneng will show you the diamond mine installations in a distance then it becomes a bit more scenic from Kanye, towards Lobatse.

Easy travel all in all and no hassle with border crossing.

Right then, an alternative certainly to the known route via Upington.
Rest stop at Kang is a good option.

I did Gaborone-Windhoek route in 2004, but that time I was using a car,so it was a bit quick. We left Gaborone at 0600 and we arrived in Windhoek around 1700. We had soo many breaks for pictures, especially after Kang, towards Ghanzi, thats a WMA(Wildlife Management Area), so you could be lucky for some few game viewing, Ostriches,Orynx, Hartebeest etc.

The road is good all the way, few trucks from Namibia to overtakes, and speed traps in Mabutsane. But like you say, if you are going to Gabz, there is construction going on between Kanye and Moshupa, they are widening the Polokwe Viewpoint, situated about ten kilometres north of Kanye on the Thamaga road, which gives a breathtaking view of the northern valley, particularly at from Kanye.

No need to go via Gabs, exit through Lobatse.
