Default Border crossing at Katima Mulilo

    Hi all

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to cross the border from Katima Mulilo to Zambia with a vehicle (M10 road) or is it just for pedestrians?

Would you rather suggest going through Ngoma, Kasane and then take the Kazungula ferry to Zambia?

    Input would be much appreciated

The M10 is a typical Zambian tarred potholed road for all motor vehicles. You do have to play chicken with the potholes.Yes I've used this road from Sesheke to Livingstone.

When were those pix taken? If recently, then the road has undergone a massive deterioration since October 2012 when I last drove it. The Katima - Sesheke crossing is relatively effortless and there is a road bridge across the Zambezi. Kazangula is worth doing just for the experience of the ferries, and they won't be there much longer, as the road bridge there is already under construction.

That;s amazing since when we were there in late 2012 that road was still under construction! So max 2 years later it was already potholed?!

Maybe 20 mil road base and 10 mil tar.Drove most of the way in 3rd gear with a few places in 4th. Can't remember engaging 5th gear.Lot's of heavy vehicles. With oncoming vehicles I had to share the tar surface with left wheels on the shoulder. Was I not glad to reach Livingstone.

In May 2015 we drove the busy road from Katima/Sesheke Border Post to Livingstone. The road between Sesheke and the Kazangula turnoff was indeed badly potholed, a marked deterioration compared to 2012.This 137km took us 2hrs. Some patching and repairs were in progress but it might be some time before this road is decently rehabilitated.

The 65km road from the Kazangula border post to Livingstone has been fully upgraded and was again excellent when we covered it in January this year.

The Ngoma - Kasane - Kazangula route from Zambia is certainly more interesting and crossing the Zambezi on the ferry is a memorable experience. However I would think this ferry route will add a couple of hours to your trip, including an extra border crossing at Ngoma. At Kazangula it took us 45min to pass through both the Zambian and Botswana border posts including the ferry ride, not too bad. The roads on this route are very good as mentioned. Also there are the extra costs to be considered on this route. The ferry ride cost us US$15 and then there are the costs of going through an extra border, Botswana, with the attendant costs of P150.

If time and expenses are important and outweigh the potholes then take the direct Katima - Livingstone route. If a more interesting route with better but more time consuming roads appeals, take the Kazangula Ferry route. We enjoy the ferry route.

Hi, anyone traveled the road between Sesheke and the Kazangula turnoff recently? and if so, what are the road conditions?
