what bird is this?

I recently bought and fitted one of these nesting logs thinking that it would just be a feature in my garden cos no way a bird is gonna nest here !
...but to my surprise, a pair of "woodpeckers" have carved up a hole in the log and are prepping it for a nest !

can anyone identify these birds?
