    Default 1979 Pontiac Trans Am

    Hi all,

I've just acquired a Trans Am which I intend to restore. The previous owner either half restored it or just neglected it completely.

The first of many problems is a broken steering wheel. This is the original steering wheel which I would like to keep. Importing a new one is possible, but I like to first try and get this one fixed.

Can anyone refer me to where I can get it properly fixed?

I believe it's made from pot metal so have it tig welded or soldered.

I'm sure that's not the original. Either way, toss it, a repaired steering wheel can kill you.

You can get wheels like that for a few hundred bucks at Motorsport shops. Get a decent name one, not Chinese rubbish .

It's pot metal yes, and I'm worried it will break in the same spot or more likely right next to the weld. I'll look into some motorsport ones, thanks Apoc.

According to the previous owner it was the smaller 305cu motor, but a gonner. For me the 350 is the better option. Easier to work on.

Hi DeVilliers. As I mentioned to other guys doing restoration, visit the car clubs like Pretoria Vintage Club and The Piston Ring in Edenvale. Get to know members and ask their help and advice. The guys are very willing to help. They have a big Swap Meet on the 20th of March at the Piston Ring Club. You will be surprised what you find there.

Dubious quality alloy resembling Aluminium but behaving like something extraterrestrial when welded.
Similar to early Italian, Japanese and modern cheap Chinese motorcycle engine casings etc.

    Hi all,

    Restoration is coming along nicely.
I'm in need of a V8 specialist in Pretoria area that can have a look at the 350 for me. It's not as smooth as it should be.

    Can anyone refer me somewhere?
