about 25years ago my brothers 2l monza died outside Citrusdal. on swinging the starter it would fire two or three times and then die. repeat. spent half a day kopkrap, disconnected the alternator, problem solved.

One or two years later same monza would run fine then the engine would sommer die. Starts and runs fine afterward. then sommer die a few days later. repeat. After much monitoring and testing, opened the ECU. Dry joint on the board. Intentional (ie. manufacturer induced) dry joint on the Dupec ECU.

thursday afternoon before Good Friday, KB260 popped the main fuse 1km from home. Replaced fuse with foil from a cigarette box and was able to get home. Vehicle kept popping the main fuse. Good Friday began to open wiring looms, remove front seats and strip most of the dash. No joy. Eventually removed the radiator Sunday morning. Loom pinched between body and chassis. That was my Easter Weekend 15 years ago.

Guardian Angel saved me countless times, the above are just three examples.

I've had a few brands. Audi, vw, Toyota, Isuzu Renault even a mini, driven far with a disco no problems ever. Some where old and well over 200k km.

But two car's from the same company left me on the side of the road.
1st time BMW e30 1989 with a new motor from BMW was fitted in 1998.
Broke a cam in 2008. I drove it home to the vaal from jhb just like that.

2nd time was a BMW e90 320d 2011. Snaped a aux belt on Oxford Road at 6:30 in the morning. I had to get it home on a flat bed.

So I won't buy a BMW again ha ha ha ha.
    2010 Toyota Fortuner 2 4x4.
    2001 Isuzu KB320 Frontier 4x4.
2012 Polo GT White with community sticker.

Ford 1600 single cab, head gasket. The wallah at the services station didn't put the radiator cap on, I was flying home to watch the rugby, stopped running 2km from home. Towed it home, stripped and repaired it myself.

2.7. Hilux, head gasket as well. Swambo had driven it the previous day, neglected to mention signs of steam from the pinhole in the radiator. Got fro Durbs to PMB and back to the Marianhill toll plaza where I noticed big steam when I stopped to pay. Pulled over and stopped rather than cook the engine. R4000 head skim, gasket, new radiator, good as new, did another 100,000km before I sold it. Was told later that the temperature gauge didn't show because the coolant was so low...

All in all not too bad considering that I'm a tight arsed Scotsman that keeps cars forever.

Coilpack nat.

Die kar self is fantasties wel(my renault)

Vw Jetta, clutch packed up, Vw Jetta, timing belt broken, VW Polo plastic oil strainer in sump broke, blocked oil pump, Vw Polo alternator stopped charging, car died at Diepsloot. From then I buy Japanese, not a problem again... Some of the Series Landies stopped a few times, but I could make a plan to get them running again.

On way down to Slaap Stad for the '95 RWC went through Kimberly with my modified VW golf 2 GTI 8 v, 2 litre, stopped at T junction at three Sisters turning right onto highway hammered the car from pull off and cam belt broke. Managed to get car to Three Sisters garage, my friend from Kuils River hired a car trailer and used his dads Audi 2.8 to pick me up. Longest day ever and coldest too, will never forget. ...

    1969 Series 2a.

We've done many miles around SA and Zim and Moz and Lesotho. In Lesotho a few years ago the master cylinder gave up the ghost at St James mission. Did two mountain passes with zero brakes to go looking for spares at Motlokong where there weren't any. Plenty of parts for all Toyots but nothing for landies in Lesotho. Had to drive it back to St James withno brakes and leave it there as I didn't want to do Sani in the snow with no brakes. Went back a week later with a new master cylinder and slapped it on. Bled the brakes and job done it less than 30 minutes. Anyway it was a good excuse to go back to Lesotho :-)

The other occasion was just outside Pretoria doing a bit of off roading and a tooth broke off one of the gears and jammed the gear box. Was towed home by a friends highly modified Classic Rangie and one of the idler pullies gave up on his engine. A Defender then towed me to Pretoria and a friend came from Jhb in his Defender to tow me back home to Jhb. That's Land Rover brotherhood :-)

In our trips I always carry spare hoses and rubber pipes and odds and sods and have managed to help many stranded motorists alongside the road. They always wonder how this old Land Rover is going to help them and get a huge surprise when they see what is tucked away in all the nooks and crannies.

Dan moet julle nie Hyundai probeer nie. Daar bestaan customers service glad nie. Nie by handelaar, of by Hyundai SA nie...

    2004 VW Polo 1.4

Water temperature gauge jumped into the red and then into the cold. Engine started pinging badly. Worn water pump. Replaced with water pump with metal impellers.

2 weeks later gearbox exploded at 130km/h, luckily just outside Stellenbosch. Called my mechanic and he towed me in. Bearing packed up, took the main shaft with it.

Final straw was the thermostat saying bye on the drive home to Windhoek. Parked it at the Renault dealer and drove away with a new Sandero.

Ek het eerlik net uitstekende diens by Hyunday Worcester gehad.

Clutch moeg.

Renault is selfde.

    Eina aou!!!
Hierdie is nie n lekker idee nie hoekom moet ek so veel pyn onthou.

In 1985 het my 1978 Passat 1300 my erens op die N2 gelos naby swellendam. Long story short ek het die volgende dag op di vlossie geklim grens toe en my arme oom moes die car gaan haal en engine oor doen.
1988 my 504 Peugeot het my gelos op my honeymoon. Water op een of ander elektrisie komponent.
1989 my Alfa export het my laat stap vanwee gebreekte plug drade.
1990 my Sierra 2l het sy eie engine geeet. 2 maal.

Daarna toe ry ek Kombi 2.1 liter T3 baie baie pyn.

Never had one of my cars leave me stranded (touch wood).
But as a kid ,my dad ran out of fuel on two occasions with a 2.6 Dawid Kramer rooi kombie , and my mothers XJ Jeep twice, once with broken Crank angle sensor and once the alternator/battery/radiator .
