    Default Breakdown thread

Please list the vehicle breakdowns you have experienced in your lifetime, along with a short description of the cause (if you know what caused it)

Just to be clear, a breakdown is when the vehicle leaves you by the side of the road and you are unable to repair it to continue your journey.

    I'll go first:

    1. 1998 Volvo S90, burst heater hose drained all the coolant, low coolant light alerted me and I could switch off immediately before further damage occurred. Technically the car could still drive but it would have overheated very quickly. The AA had to flatbed it to a garage.

    2. 1973 Citroen DS23 Pallas, burst hydraulic pipe leaked all the hydraulic fluid out, causing the suspension to drop. I could still drive it but the belly was scraping on the road. The AA dragged it onto a flatbed, damaging the underside in the process, but there wasn't really any other way.

    3. 2015 Corolla Quest, valve train failure caused by casting fault. The motor just stopped and couldn't restart. The AA flatbedded it to the dealer who accused me of over revving it

Uno Fire 1.1 - Cable from petrol pedal to throttle snapped. Rigged a spanner between the throttle and the alternator that held it at higher revs than idle so I could at least get to second gear, and not have to crawl along at near stall, and then drove to a garage a few km away

Landy had a flat battery at the checkers, 1km from home. Busy maneuvering the landy to be push started and I stripped the steering rod between the steering wheel and box. Flatbed home was quite embarrassing...

    Nissan Patrol 4.5GL
Split engine block after con rod snapped.
Towed it for 1000 kms then flat bedded it on trailer for another 1500 kms.

North West Zambia to Gaborone via Lusaka (Thanks again HenriS)

    Edit:
Ohh ... paid it myself including repair in RSA and return duty for parts into Bots. (unfortunately before TuffStuff offered services this side of the border)

    I almost forgot about one.

1994 BMW 325i, on my way from PE to CT, hit a buck just outside Mosselbay late at night doing about 160, the front of the car was quite mangled but after some roadside repairs it seemed driveable again. What I didn't know was that the impact bent a pulley. 10km before CT the pulley decided to seize up with a helluva noise. The AA flatbed took the car to a local garage in Observatory and R2000 later it was running again. Insurance later fixed the body damage.

1989 BMW 318i (M40 motor) ~80000km. Stripped cambelt on Good Friday 1992 at the bottom of Roeland St after driving down from Pretoria via Hermanus. Could only be repaired the next week (bent exhaust valves), still ran Two Oceans, but Otter Trail hike starting the Monday had to be cancelled. BMW still ran until 1998 when I sold it on 240000km, whereafter friends wife still ran it for several years.
My other cars were Landy SII, Citroen Club, Peugeot 505, Ford Escourt, BMW 316, Isuzu 250D, Landy 110 V8, and Chrysler Voyager 3.3. None of them ever dropped me (touch wood, still have last two).

First week after coming back from the mechanics. Overheating. Suspect the thermostat was faulty. had to tow it with A-frame. Workshop covered the cost at least.

    1. Broke a CV joint on a Golf Bakkie, while passing a bus outside Oudtshoorn. It was funny seeing the speedo climb off the dail when it let go at about 140 km/h in 4th

    2. RooiTjiep seized up due to sludge in the sump blocking the pick-up. Assumption is the mother of all Butterfly-ups After the Forum rebuild, I have covered roughly 60k km and the motor is as sweet as the day it left the factory.

Everything else was fixable at the road side (including a head gasket replacement on a 2.3 Chevair motor.)

V8 disco 1. Waterpomp opgepak op eerste dag wat ek hom gekoop het. Gelukkig was my buurman agter my in my patfinder, hy het my gaan aflaai toe ek disco gaan koop het.

Ingesleep, waterpomp vervang.

Hy wil nie vorentoe of agtertoe of eers stilstaan in park nie.

    Series 2A V8

Het gaan staan sonder petrol X2

Petrolpompie se fuse het geblaas en ek het nie n spare by my gehad nie. 600M van die huis af. Lekker gedraf daai dag.

Het hom verdrink by Groenkloof. Tegnies nie n break down nie. Hy het gevrek in die water en soos enige ding wat warm is en vining afkoel het hy water deur die olieseels getrek

Like, if we have 100 broken down Toyotas but only 50 Landys, you should get a GWM
