Question Sani pass with a rav4?

    Hey everyone,

Okay, so we are planning a trip to do the sani pass at the end of July. Our friends have a Toyota Rav4 (not AWD) and I would like to know if they would be able to do the sani pass with the Rav as it is not 4x4?

I heard they have tarred the sani pass, but I am not sure if a Rav will still make it as we want to go to the high pub and everything else. Would it still be better and more recommended to rather take a 4x4 or will the Rav be able to make it?

Take note that we are going in July/August and will obviously be expecting snow, etc..

    Thnx!

Thanks for all the replies and opinions, we will definitely not take the Rav.
    Thank you en Dankie

You definitely need 4x4. They don't allow 2x4's through the border post. Even if they did, the steep gradients and often slippery surface makes 2x4 too risky.

As above, plus when you encounter snow, it will be slippery and icy in shady areas.
Even 4x4's may struggle in these conditons.

4x4/AWD is needed when we last did it with the terios there was a deep hole on one of the bends and it took some momentum to get through
wet patches on the road will also let the 2wd get to a standstill

Not so sure the pass is tarred yet. Check your facts.

The pass is not tarred. The Lesotho side border post is tarred and the road in Lesotho is tarred for many kilometers.
The Road Act of...... prohibits vehicles not equipped with 4x4 up the pass. But in saying that, I have seen many Ford Kugas, Freelanders and even a Suzuki SX4 go up without issues but it was dry. Think they may all battle a bit in the wet.

We've done Sani many times.........was our yearly group outing as well end of July every year for the past 6 or 7 years.......

We've seen bad snow that time of the year.........once or twice it was way less again.......you can never tell and it's always wise to check / confirm conditions even before going up as it changes sooooooooooo quickly.......

Driving up Sani when it is dry (no rain & no snow) is very much doable with any SUV, no serious challenge......... Yes you are supposed to have 4x4 as per law but it is not that well enforced unfortunately........

Driving up (or down) Sani when it's soggy / wet from rain or when there's snow without proper 4x4 is just plain stupid and not to be recommended......

    Yes its not allowed.

If you have the skill, its possible though. (as stated, in the dry)
Its not about how fast you are but about how quick you get there...

Sani pass is just a normal gravel road. When dry, I'll drive it easily up with my wifes Figo, when wet or in snow it is another story. Went up there july last year in deep snow and lots of Ice. My Jeep with 35s and both lockers on went up very easy. Very few people made it up. Saw so many people turn around and I was dissapointed in them.not even trying. If its dry, do it, if not, dont..

I went up and down Sani in my Forester when there was some ice on the top section. IMHO the tarred pass between Afriski and the border at Fouriesburg is much more dangerous/ difficult when it has ice on the surface.
