um. I forget what it is. probably lead sulphate or sulphite or something like that, I know the reaction releases hydrogen from the sulphuric acid, which can go bang very easily.

as 4e says.... Bicarb washes it off, and grease prevents it reforming.
Not hydrochloric acid but sulphuric acid!

I need to echo that I always found powdery acid on the negative terminals of Car batteries, Gate motor batteries and Alarm Batteries.

I clean with Bicarb of Soda and pour leftover 20W-50 engine oil on BOTH Terminals to seal off where the Terminal enters the battery casing. Issue resolved. (OK looks messy but it works - battery is not going to the Show!). If I fit a new battery, I oil both terminals after installation.

PS: Further to this, I found the Neutrals to break off 1st on Electrical Appliances (Hair Dryer, Kettle and especially Electric Irons) at the cord outlet where it flexes MOST. Riddle which I cannot get resolved...... (records attached)

    Thanks for the advice guys.

    Feed back:

The battery now residing in the feed to the electric fencing. I did the load test, by switching off the mains to the exciter. 2 hours later the battery was showing 10 v, and some battery acid lying on top of the battery.

So time for a new battery.

One thing I have never thought about, is how much juice does an electric fence suck per hour?

Google tells me 1.5 Kw over 24 hours

    Thus:

    1500W/220V= 6.8A over 24 hours

    6.8A/24 hrs = 0.3 A/hr

    Am I correct??

If so, I am planning on getting a 18 Ah Pb battery. Based on 70% max discharge:

    18 Ah x 30% = 5.4 Ah available.

    5.4 Ah / 0.3 A/hr = 19 hrs run time.

    Help!

    I noted Stafix has 33, 52 and 64W Energizers.

Sorry off your topic but same line: I installed an 18Amp/Hr on my Electric Gate Motor in parallel with the onboard battery - it packed up after 4,5 years. Money down the drain as a 6 or7 AHr is ample. Nothing gained!

The whole idea of using a larger battery is to cover for the atrocious amount and length of outages of our electrical service providers.

Today we were down again for 18 hours.

Thus I need to keep that wire fuzzing for at least 24 hrs when the power goes down.

A 7Ah just wont make it.

However, whatever the cause, I have discovered that a little Coke poured over the terminal clears it quickly, rinse with some window spray or even water and some Q20 or similar seems to hold it at bay for a while.
It seems that a slightly loose or cracked terminal clamp can also cause this. I don't actually think it is a battery acid leak issue.
Anyway for the last couple of years I have no longer experienced this problem.
    Hi Peter.

    Trust you are good.

Without starting a complete new thread, i did a search for something close enough to continue with.

It happened to be your thread!

    Cheers

    >>> DOWN FOR 18 HOURS<<< Thanks. Now it makes sense. Sorry. Make your sums and invest in a ~60 A/Hr car battery or smaller? (if you don't have space constraints). Batteries last 5? years usually. (Hope I don't get crusified!)

PS: Sept 2017 Installers Price List an 18 AHr battery was R502. 30% still needs to be added for public/over counter......... I leave this thought!

The problem you is exactly what I had at client. The onboard charger was not charging enough to keep bigger battery up to spec. Built a charger that put at least 5 amps back every time power went down. They also had an 18Amp battery in that looked the part. Put a load across it and folded immediately. Check the current that charger pushes out. On centurion gate motors the charger goes via control board. This might also be part of the problem.
