    Default TV - 12 volt ?

On a farm, away from Eskom, an employee of mine, who's only source of electricity is a 80 watt panel connected to a 100 Ah battery, with 3 LED lights. Now he wants a TV. Question is, are they available in 12 volt? At this stage he has no TV. If it's not available in 12 volt, I presume the only other option is an inverter coupled to battery(ies). Should one think about an inverter, how do one calculate the size of the inverter as well as the batteries according to the specs on the TV, keeping cost in mind ?

    Yes, you can get them.

Comes with a little adapter that clips onto a power supply them onto 12v battery.

But generally very small. I have only seen 19" sized ones. It is however a flat screen.

probably cheaper to buy a small TV or monitor and a small invertor to run it.

Also try specialized solar in George. They sell 12v appliances from tv's to fridges and everything in between. Prices are very reasonable.

Found it. PicknPay sells the 17" Aim , works from 12 volt, for R 899. Seems like a bargain! Just have to go and collect it.Lets hold thumbs.

Won't make a difference, as they are going the route of set-top boxes.

I have a 12 volt / 220 volt black and white TV dating back to the seventies - still in perfect working condition.

Obviously. At the time when camping with out electricity when we used those home made tri-angular alu antennas and kept viewing time to the battery capacity.
Wonderful days when innovation, not money, was the requirement to make a camping experience superior.

    Hi All

I am wanting to install a 12 volt TV on a sailing boat.

Are there any new suggestions, since the last post on this thread, as to what to buy and where to source a 12 volt TV?

A small smart TV with at least 2 HDMI inputs and 2 USB inputs would be good. More inputs would be better.

    Thanks in anticipation

You won't get a smart TV. I suggest you look for a computer monitor with a external 12V power supply similar to a laptop power supply, they are getting scares but are still around.
Don't you have a inverter on the boat with which you power other things?

I have a small Aim tv (22inch I think) I bought for my cctv system from Pick 'n Pay, runs on 12v, with external powersupply. Not the best HD display but works for my needs. Thing is look for a tv / monitor with the power supply not built in.
Then you just get one of these plugs and wire directly to 12v. Just check on back of tv that it is 12v.

I bought my 19 inch at Space Television in Woodstock . Not a smart Tv but does have HDMI and RCA input , at the time PnP had AIM Tv`s that were 12v with a transformer for 220v. I don`t think you will get a very large TV in 12V.

Hifi corp has lots of cheap Sinotech tv's 24 -32 Inch. 60w power consumption. Why not small inverter 150w, less than 5 amps on the 12v battery.
