Default Oldest Land Rover in South Africa

To mark the final defender being stamped out today, at this evenings bring and braai at LR Stellenbosch, sponsored by Land Rover Africa, a gentleman (name and identity withheld as courtesy) had in tow (it runs well though!) nothing less than the oldest Land Rover in the country. Just sitting there...his, net so.

Story is that he was asked to extend it by an acquaintance who was a large set gent. He said he would rather not, and offered to buy it instead, which he did, three years ago, for a such a bargain I would rather not say.

After some time and virtually no restoration, such is its condition, he decided to trace the serial # and found it to be #1500 off the production line, and the very first to be sent to SA, there were no dealers in those days. Apparently only 16 of this type made it here.

He has a standing offer of around R300k by an interested party who would plop it in a container and ship it away from SA, but he's not interested. I said I wouldn't sell it for less than R1m.

I should have remembered to take a pic of the engine and chassis plaque, but his research is legitimate. Look out in the next issue of Land Rover Africa I think it should feature. This, friends, is the oldest Land Rover in the country.

Beautiful! It is a pity that the body/rims are painted the wrong colour. It should be light green like the Heritage Defender standing next to it. The chassis should not be painted black but should have a matt silver finish.

I helped a friend sell a mint series 1 with a series 2 engine for 350k the other day in SA. Sure that original Series 1 pre-1950's is worth a lot more.

I know of a 1950 80 inch that is very original, same owner for more than 50 years with a lot of history that was recently sold for R500 000.
