    Exclamation Resolved - vehicle purchased

    RESOLVED

    Hello All,

Im a complete newbie to 4 x 4, and have been trawling the forum for months reading up on trip reports, vehicle choices and accessories, travelling advice etc. etc. A big thanks to the members I have PMd who have given me invaluable advice.

I am finally ready to start getting ready for my 6 month tour of Southern Africa, covering Bots, Nam, Zim, Zam, and Malawi departing on the 1st of April 2016, but heres the problem, WHAT VEHICLE TO BUY?

Im not at ALL a technical or mechanically minded person, and will be travelling on my own, have I mentioned that Im a 44 year old woman and despite all my research Im completely perplexed and a little intimidated by the vehicle choices out there, so Im hoping for some good solid advice from experienced forum members:

The budget is R 700k . And needs to cover buying the vehicle (4 x 4, automatic, diesel, RELIABLE) and the following add ons (if Im missing anything, please feel free to let me know):

    RTT
    BF GOODRICH KO2 17 TYRES X 6 (2 spares)
    ROOF RACK
    CANOPY (depending on vehicle choice)
    LONG RANGE FUEL TANK
    DUAL BATTERY SYSTEM
    SOLAR SET UP
    2 X 40L FREEZERS
    SAT PHONE
    OSTRICH WING AWNING
    SWING ARM SPARE TYRE CARRIER
    RECOVERY EQUIPMENT

Due to a MVA in 2011, a Fortuner is not an option, besides that, Im open to suggestions. I wont be doing any hardcore 4 x 4 routes but need something that will get me through the sand, and rocky or muddy track conditions.

Ive toyed with the idea of the Ford Ranger, but looking at the Pajero Sport, this might be a better option (Im currently a BMW X3 driver so the Sport offers the same sort of feel as opposed to the bakkie set up) .. any and all suggestions , not limited to the Ranger or the Sport - would also be GREATLY appreciated !!!!!

    Thank you,
    Emma

Does it have to be automatic?

For a trip like that there is only one class of vehicle for me, and that's the Cruiser 76 / Defender category. You won't get an automatic, though. My choice would be the 76 4.2 donkey.

    Default Hi RobH

The vehicle needs to be an automatic ..... when I get back from my travels, I still need to chug chug around GP, not fun in a manual

If you go the double cab route - AMAROK 4motion A/t (there, I've said it!!)

SUV - you can choose form quite a few:

    1. Ford Everest
    2. Pajero Sport
    3. Toyota Prado
    4. Discovery
    5. Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk

    Just to name a few.

    Hi Emma

What about the Pajero proper (not Sport)? Specifically the GLS or Exceed LWB. Go check them out at your nearest Mitsi dealer and try not falling in love!

Pajero and keep it or look for an older Cruiser 105/78 and sell it when you return from your trip. With all that kit you will battle with Pajero Sport, packing space aint great.

She's going solo, if she can't fit into a PS then heaven help her. I like your idea of buying older and selling on return, good option.

Emma, why 17" tyres? 16's are going to be far easier to get your hands on in remote areas if you have a problem.

Remember that the Pajero Sport now comes standard with R70 000's worth of extras! Full Front Runner roof rack, towbar, Stofpad rock sliders, bash plate, adjustable rear shocks, etc.

Solo, didnt see that, in that case SWB Pajero, take the rear seats out then you have a boot similar to a LWB.
You'll get one for a fraction of the cost and can keep it till you die.

Cruiser 100 VX, you'll get a low miler at around R 350-400k (Diesel)

    Or Nissan Patrol GRX 4800??

Newish Pajero DiD?? - even a SWB??

The Cruiser and Patrol may feel a bit "intinidating" to you, being huge cars.

What about a FJ Cruiser?? Great engine, auto, enough space, 2 door but with 2 suicide doors....... They're VERY VERY nice driver's cars!!

    Answering some questions:

The 17" idea come from various threads on the forum - if 16" is more readily available, then I'll stick with the 16"

Diesel vs. Petrol - I would prefer the diesel

New vs. Used - I prefer new

This is the first of a few trips, so I need a keeper

Packing Space - I travel light, and will take only what I need

This is true, but petrol should also be considered I reckon.
