    Default MIG Welder

I looked at this thread but it is a bit old - http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/...ad.php?t=50377 Starting new.

I'm looking at buying a MIG (or Multi) welder. Something like the MatWeld MultiMig 250 MAT9082. It is going at BWP9500-00 over here. Welding Kit (Cables, Flow Meter) is sold separate at BWP2500-00. Is this the going rate or will I get it cheaper in SA (1 BWP = 1.42 ZAR)

What other options for the weekend welder?

I can get the ASH5 shielding gas at Afrox at BWP1120-00 for 17.8kg plus BWP185-00 per month. How long will it last? (How many 15kg steel rolls will it weld?)

I have Therma max machines, also Chinese, look the same but are a little more and yellow.

Right now I have 11 - 3 I bought in the last year, the other 8 were bought about 8 years ago.

I had to have the circuit boards replaced on 3 that had been standing for a while and when we fired them up the workshop dust fried the boards.... cost of R2000 each (I got the 3 new ones while they were in, but they were only gone for 2 weeks)

also have 2 TIGS and 4 investors.

A few years ago when I needed more machines I couldn't get Thermamax, so I took two MAttwelds.

The one was replaced 3 times in 2 weeks and they eventually gave me a discount on a Thermamax when they came into stock.

the other one lasted 3 months and packed up, couldn't get spares, couldn't be bothered and sold it for scrap.

    Just saying....

Brights is showing the 9082 for R8699
Welding mig acc kit for mat9082 for R2399
Welding tig torch 26v for mat9082 for R900
So, R12k for the basics, excluding TIG electrodes and so on.
Yours is BWP12k = ZAR17k plus shipping etc. It'd almost be worth your while to schedule a trip to Cape.....

Kobus have a look at the Afrox MIG welders, local support is good and somehow I find welding with them easier than the normal Chinese welding machine.

For DIY work the gas and wire lasts quite a long time

Edit: The Afrox 175 multiprocess welder comes with the MIG and TIG set

With the Nissan I will burn more than 5K worth of fuel to the Cape and back

Anywhere in Rustenburg I could go and buy something semi decent? (NOT Adendorfs ! ) ThermaMax/MatWeld ?

The business people are laughing all the way to the bank over on this side because of the exchange rate. They do BWP 1 = ZAR 1 .

I also need some advice please. I received a gift voucher of R5000 which I can use at Builders Warehouse or Builders Express. I thought of buying myself a new welding machine (I have been using an old oil bath machine for many years).

I can get Tradeweld and Disston welding machines at Builders. My first question is whether anybody can help me to choose between these two manufacturers. And then there is also the question which model.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards
    Ockert

The bottom one. You need to see what the flowrate is.

You can get away on about 5, but when it gets a bit drafty, push it up to 15.

I found AFROX to be a total rip-off with their gas prices and especially the cost of cylinder rental. I have a small "Einhell" MIG machine that I got from MAKRO in 2000 and used a small Weld Mix cylinder on it that was always filled / exchanged by Weld & Cut in Jet Park. Just over a year ago AirLiqe stopped filling the small cylinders completely so I had to look for another option.
AFROX wouldn't even talk to me because it wasn't for a company and the cylinder rental would have been over R400.00 a month. Everyone I approached quoted rentals between R350.00 and R400.00 a month.
I then found JAMAC in Sebenza (Edenvale) that supply me with a full size "Teryl" weld mix for a very good price and only charge R67.00 a month cylinder rental. I now get all my gas requirements from them including the LP gas for my home use. They also sell welders so give them a call on 011 452 4503 for outstanding service.
Although it's a "hobby" type welder it handles welding 6mm plate without a problem.

@Henri. Thanks. The flow type regulators seems more available over here. Even at Afrox they are not too expensive.

@Paul#25. It will not be viable for me to cross the border and do a few 100km to get the gas. I'm stuck with Afrox and Air Liquide.

Afrox 17.5kg - P1120 plus P185 per month.... and then again P1120 to refill when empty.
Air Liquide 17.5kg - P1990 plus 6 month rental in advance P893 plus P400 refundable deposit. That gives P3283 initial payment. Refill is P1990.

    No easy options.

Using it for handy work, that big bottle will last you at least a year. Damn expensive gas then.

KobusDJ, which gas have they quoted you on? Those prices seem high even with transport to Bots. This is the gas I am using:

Teral: A general purpose shielding gas mixture used for MAG welding on al thicknesses of carbon steel (mild steel) in all positions. Ideally suited for general fabrication work and high production situations. This 3 component shielding gas exhibits minimal spatter levels in spray and pulsed transfers.

    Afrox would be Ash5.

Yes, it is the Ash5. Argoshield®5 is approximately 93% Argon, 5% CO2 and 2% oxygen.

Teral is the Air Liquide equivalent shielding gas. They are more expensive than Afrox.

What is the major benefit to have a MIG welder instead of general stick DC inverter welder?

Do lots of DIY welding, and looking at options
