I found a company by the name of LDR Engines. Bad rep on Hello Peter, good rep on Google reviews. Their engines are sourced in the UK and (supposedly) all have less than 100K on. Took the plunge and bought one.

Complete (15P) motor with Aircon, Alternator, Power steering Pump, Fan, Starter, Flywheel, clutch-plate, pressure-plate, the WORKS, literally plug and play. Cost me R29K with a 3 month guarantee (installed it myself. If they install it at a cost of 5.5K you get a 1 year guarantee).

Have done just under 10 000 k's with it now and am VERY happy!
That sounds like a seriously good value, isn't R29k pretty much the price you'd pay for just a new head and fitment?

Plus you can still sell your old engine for parts with the extra ancillaries and recoup a good few thousand Rand.

Correct. A new ("naked") head would have been about R20K. Add valves, springs, valve stem seals, cotter pins, seating and grinding of valves, etc - plus you only get 12P and up - the 10P had its fuel return running inside the head (That was one of its weak points and also why they were prone to cracking) and 12P's return runs outside, so it would have entailed some modification as well.

I bought an AMC 10P head when I did my replacement, and, I had the choice of with or without valves, too. Granted, it is a few years, now.

Feedback from engineers: Head has no cracks and holding pressure. Exhaust valves on their way out so replacing those and adding a bit more engineering.

Was wondering if there was anything else worth doing while the head is off?

Did they check if the fuel rail is holding pressure or just the water jacket?

good question, considering a lot of heads fail between the fuel rail channels and the valve galleries I think

If you did not send injectors with they did not test the fuel rail, unless they have their own set of injectors to test with..

If they don't have the injectors then I'd like to know how the tested the fuel rail..

Are you sure you're not being given a BS story?

The repair is being done at a well known Indy and the head removed from the vehicle and stripped and sent away by them. Appreciate the heads up but I have received great service thus far.

I presume they would have sent the injectors with but will ask to make sure

The Disco now has a surging problem that they can seem to troubleshoot.

Need some advice dealing with the mental anguish of almost but not quite there.

Have they not maybe messed up with the Piping on the Turbo waste gate?

Fuel regulator was leaking and replaced. Not sure if that was the cause of the surging but she is a different vehicle. Smooth as silk! Happy days. Time to put on some miles. Thanks for all the input.

Now to test some of Markus' venues in KZN and beyond...

Default Re: TD5 Head Gasket Again?

So following up from my pressure in coolant system saga, 3 weeks ago on the way to Alberton the Td5 overheated and was pushing coolant out the cap. (Posted on another thread somewhere.) So this is now the 3 rd head repair due to overheating, well actually 2nd as the 1st job was botched by the Indie that did it. Landy has run for 4 years and 50 000 Km's since last gasket job.
This time the gasket was definitely gone as even a short trip would have excessive water pressure and bubbles in the coolant.

    1. So the head was removed and it was confirmed head gasket had gone. Head was checked by a reliable engineering firm and it passed the pressure testing as well as no sign of any cracking or warping. Valve guides however were worn and a decision was taken to refurbish the head. (Car has 310000 km's on, so understandable.

    2. While at it, i took the injectors to a mate of mine who works at a very well know Diesel Shop in Randburg to check, and this is where the surprises came in. Injectors tested 100% (35 different test cycles IIRC) and this on a vehicle that has had 3x head gasket repairs done (Botch one included), has overheated 3x times in the last 6 years, and has 310 000 Km's on. They even ran the test 2x and everytime same result. As my mate said, this is a first for him. Told him must be the 2SO So based on this the Injectors were then also cleaned and refurbished and looking pretty damn smart.

    3. Now after a couple of beers and thinking that maybe I should make sure this is a proper job done it was decided, with much bad influence from a friend who I think was just looking for something to do, the engine block removed and will now be "refurbished" as well.

    Things I plan on doing:
Hone cylinders and fit new STD pistons and rings (Sleeves still have original hone marks in them)
Have the block face polished to ensure there are no issues.
New Big end and main bearings
    Replace all gaskets

The following was inspected and still seem Ok but not sure if it is worth replacing. (Checked and measured according to Hayness Manual)

    Oil pump
    Oil cooler
    Water pump

What I am wondering is if it is worth re-sleeving instead of just a hone, or rather go over size.

I would change oil pump, water pump, timing chain as a matter of course. Also do oil cooler if not already done. Use OE.

You guys might frown at me, but it works for me.

I put a very thin sheen of Vicror Rhines silicone gasket sealer on a head gasket. But I repeat. Very thin.

    Works for me.
