    Default Blinkgat Trailer XXL Review - after maiden trip

    As some of you know, SarelF (with Elise doing the tents and extras) built us a XXL Blinkgat Trailer.

    The specs are as follows:

    2 x Full Double Beds on top;
    85l Snomaster Double Door Freezer;
    Totai Oven and Stove;
    275l water tanks in chassis;
    2t braked axle made to fit the Cruiser's track and rims (trailer also has BF AT's on - same as the Cruiser);
    300Watt Solar panels mounted on the roof;
    2 x 120Ah Batteries;

    We expected it to be less of a caravan but more than a trailer in all respects, from towing, weight, comfort and space. It ticks all these boxes whether good or bad.

    Our maiden trip was a 3 week trip during December to the Kgalagadi, camping two weeks in Nossob.

    Here are pictures of the full setup at Nossob:

    Opting for an off-grid campsite next to the fence, we were not allowed to plug into the camp's generator supply. So the Solar had to do its part. The Snomaster was set to -15 on both compartments in days that reached between 46 and 48 degrees C. We even spoilt the kids to ice cream in Nossob (a first in all our visits there). Lights also ran from these batteries.

    The gas oven was also a winner. Having bought some frozen raw Hamburger Rolls, Croissants and Danish Apple pies from Deeghuys and having kept them frozen, we had fresh bread and deserts in Nossob which is also unheard of (except for the "potbrood" of the past).

    The 200l fresh Joburg water we took along was filtered through an inline pump and H20 filter before drinking - We finished off the 200l between the 4 of us in just two weeks - it was HOT!

    The bed was the best! We slept late every day (because it is holiday after all)to the amusement of our friends and still had great sightings! The bed is well ventilated from all four sides (thanks to Elize's tentwork). I fit in perfectly to my full extent of 1.84meters. No more bending of the knees to avoid kicking the bottom.

    The best part is that the bedding including pillows, duvets, sleeping bags, can travel on the bed. The top of the trailer, to open the bed and fit the ladder, takes 1minute and 20 seconds.

    When overlanding, all time you would need in addition to this is to lower the 4 stabiliser legs. Which in itself takes 90 seconds.

    The awnings on both the kitchen and bedroom sides are fixed to the roof with the poles and ropes in a zipped bag. This is folded onto the roof and strapped secure to ensure that the bags don't weigh down on the aluminium slide. The sides to close the rooms are zipped onto the awnings when needed.

    Storage space is more than ample. Clothing and loose items fit into large drawers. We had no luggage (except for the usual vanity case) inside the car. Everything was packed into the trailer.

    Tare weight (incl Fridge, Batteries, Tents) before loading any water, clothes or food is 1,100kg. This is similar to the Jurgens XCape that weighs 1,050kg.

    Gross weight is 2,000kg which gives a payload of 900kg (this figure for the XCape is approx. 350kg)

    Total height is 1,700mm so it is lower than the Cruiser. Total width is 2,080mm which is somewhat wider than the Cruiser but we tapered the nosecone diagonally to assist with wind deflection.

    Cruiser tows it comfortably loaded at 110km/h true speed (4th gear - because 5th is not for heavy towing). Stability is very good. Nose weight is somewhat heavy at 165kg when loaded but that Sarel and I will give attention to.

    Stopping at Molopo Lodge for breakfast:

    Whilst packing at home before the trip:

    Whilst stopping at Dikbaarskolk for picnic (next to the resident Pufadder's tree):

    (The homemade conveyor belt stone guards fitted to the Cruiser is what I built 4 years ago and fits with galvanized pipe into the high-lift jack points)

    In summary - we really enjoy our Blinkgat!

    Total cost, all in - R154,000.00.

    As for snags - I made a list - but it is improvements and not snags. So we are happy campers!!
