Default London to Cape Town World Record attempt

Our 2 sons are attempting to drive from London to Cape Town in 10 days, in an attempt to break the world record of 10 Days, 3 hrs and 15 min. Paul Hanson and George Coleman will travel down the West Coast of Africa, a first for this attempt, using a Land Rover Disco 2 with a TD5 engine. They have modified the interior by adding a bed and a 200 liter fuel tank. The suspension, clutch, Turbo and hoses have all been upgraded. Please feel free to follow them on YB Races app, and this FB page - https://www.facebook.com/Londontocapetownworldrecord/ or http://london-capetown.com/

Wow that's an average speed of 66km/h non stop for 10 days if they want to make it! Will be checking in on this.

The time has finally come, after a 24hr delay due to DRC holding onto their documents. Today the visas were issued, and they got their passports back at 1715, yeah, 15 min after embassy closed. Very fortunate that they did keep the doors open for them, and so they should have after waiting nearly a month for the last visa.

Remember to follow from 0500UTC 15 Jan 16. http://london-capetown.com/ or download the app from YB Races on your iphone or Android.

After getting through customs in Morocco, and just 2 hrs down the road, the radiator hose got clipped by the fan, which needed to be repaired. 45 min delay, not bad.

Tomorrow is going to be a challenge. They going through Burkina Faso, but skirt the capital. Has anyone been in these countries when this turmoil is in progress?

Nearing Senegal, the military are stopping them. Handouts are already happening, or no go. Wasted half hour and got away with a bribe. Their insurance wasn't accepted, even though legal.

It has all come to an abrupt STOP. The chassis and a drop link on the RH rear has snapped, and on the LH rear the shock has torn out. Road conditions very bad. I am seeking help. They in Bakel, Senegal, trying to find parts and a welder.

After 8hrs on side of the road and getting the chassis welded back on, they on the road again. Hopefully it goes a bit easier, but no record this time.
