    Question Fuel gauge reading empty

    Hi guys.

I need some advice on how to fault find a fuel gauge that reads empty with the reserve light on.
    I have a defender td5 2000 110.

I had no problems before and this just happened after a quick run to the shops.

    Many thanks in advance.

Happend to me when I still had my Freelander and had to take it to land rover to get it fixed.

I think the float inside the tank is not work as it should.

Most likely the sensor in the tank - just had the same problem on the old Suuz

Just fill it again and see, maybe just got stuck - happened to me on my Isuzu once. Dont know how but it did. After the fill up all was well again.

    Hi Guys

    Thanks for the advice.

I fitted a new pump assembly complete. I tested the old fuel sender and it had an open circuit.
So I started by cutting hatch to get access to the pump. After testing the old one, a complete unit was fitted. Some advice:
Removal. Clean around the fitting before using a screw driver to knock the ring anticlockwise.
Remove the fuel pump and be careful as it is spring loaded and take care when removing, as you don't want to hurt the float etc.

Refitting. I tried to fit the seal to the pump first but it didnt want to work that way. So fitted the seal to the tank first, then dropped in the pump, (making sure to seat the pump in correct position) and fit the top ring collar. Clockwise with screw driver. ( keeping pressure on the top of the pump to prevent it from popping up and out of position.

Here are some measurements for the hole. I only cut away half of both supports. The hole I cut is a tight fit. From the rear- from carpet holder to bottom cut is 3950mm and from the left looking to the front of landy is 3150mm. Then its pretty much a square from there, (measurements are for the bottom left corner. I made it 150mm high and 145mm wide.

After testing to make sure all is ok and on leaks are found, once I filled her to the max, I will fit a flat piece of Ali with pop rivets to make a lid. Need a flat seal so it doesn't interfere with the sliding draw system.

So after I did some tests I found it was leaking. removed the some diesel, as I have a long range tank. (releasing pressure on the seal) Then I tightened the Ring collar even more. Filled tank and drove to test. All Good. Then I sealed the hole with a plate with self tapper screws, ( to I don't have to drill out pop rivets) and put some gasket maker around the edges to stop water and dust getting in.

Here is a picture of the hole.

Problem was solved and the old pump and assembly was cleaned and packed away for travel spares. Price on the pump. OOCH! thats all i can say.

    Regards steff
