Default Tanzania- Northern Circuit- Natron Road

    Hi Forumites,

Planning to do a self drive next October 2016. Exiting Serengeti from Kleinīs Gate through the Natron Road to Mto-wa-mbo. Heard that there are quite a few tolls (3) that charge around 50USD pp on total. Does anyone had this experience recently? How safe it is? and are there any more tolls to pay?

Thank you all for the advise, and keep well on this festive season.

    Seasons greetings.

apfac, we purposely decided not to go to Lake Natron based on local advice earlier this year. In Arusha we were told that the Masai in the area had become very difficult and the road toll fees, fees for camping and all sorts of charges for entry to various view sites had become extortionate. This was from many sources and some of the tour companies have decided to stop going there.

At Lobo Public Campsite, usually the first stopover after coming from Natron via Kleins Gate, we heard many stories from tour guides of the hellishly bad roads. On that basis we abandoned our plans to visit Natron.

    Hi Stan,

Thank you for your wise input. It looks that tolls and charges vary a lot, pending purely on luck. Some people have taken the Longido road to/ from Natron, as it seems not so much used by tourists.

Thank you "Slow Donkey" and have a fantastic/lekker trip.

But think: when you go back via Ngorongoro you'll pay much more, even when you just drive through.

We drove this road last year in November from Mto waMbo - Lake Natron - Lobo and we payed 2 x 10 Dollars, 1 x 15 Dollar, and the fee for Camping at World view campground, 10 Dollars. This campground is very beautiful.

The road was bad, but in Serengeti Nationalpark we found some roads much worse.

Thank you Beate. Indeed experiences really vary a lot. You have paid the "standardized" amount, i believe at Engaragura Gate, Longido gate and at Engarasero gate. There are people reporting that apart from this, have paid for "wilderness permit of 70 USD". it looks like one never know what is going to happen!

    Thank you again.

    Hi Beate,

Do you think it will be easier to drive it northwards (to Kleinīs Gate) or southwards ( from Kleinīs Gate) ?

    Thank you.

    Hi apfac

a short update from June 2015

Like Beate said 2x US$10, 1x US$ 15 pp but unfortunately there is a new fee to pay for Loliondo Conservation Area US$15 pp in advance. They control the permit near by Mto wa Mbu.

We had no problems with the Maasai or Sonjo on the road. Coming from Kleins Gate the last kilometers before Lake Natron are a bit bad but the landscape is amazing. For us it was absolutely worth to visit Lake Natron.

A few pics you can find here
