I would not do a week long trip there but for a quick weekend getaway, that is really really close by, especially for me that just want to test out new gear before the longer trips it was more than sufficient.

Lot's of recommendations for Almega in Dinokeng in the thread, we were there this past weekend.
Great place, nice big campsites with even space for 2 caravans on a single stand. We were a group with 3 caravans and 3 tents, we booked 2 sites and easily fitted.
Great ablutions, each stand has its own private bathroom with a huge shower etc.

Plenty bird life and a swimming pool for the hot summer days.
A nice touch, they come around 2 or so times per day selling ice and wood at very decent prices, one would think a place like this will charge much much more.

You see the owners all around camp the entire day, giving personal atention and sorting out issues where needed. Unfortunately they had their hands full with the loadshedding, having to pump enough water and of course their were a couple of people who blamed them for the loadshedding.

I'm a bit skeptical if I see that a camp site allow music, their rules state it has to be quiet by 21:00. Saturday evening there was a group who played some music, at one stage still early evening it got a bit unplesent, but the owner quickly sorted them out and by 21:00 they switched off completely.

Any recommendations for a place to go in December for a week or 2.
Not too far from Pretoria, 1, 2 maybe 3 hours drive. A quiet secluded bush experience, not a caravan park experience. If possible a place with reasonable pricing, not crazy December take things a bit too far pricing. If the place has flush toilets and water it's a go, we are sorted in terms of electricity so that's not needed.
I want to take the parents away for a week or two.

We camped at Willemsrus in Dinokeng last weekend.
Very nice, clean and quite. Best Bathrooms I have seen for a long time.
The get in touch link on their website does not work. Best to phone or email Jeanette directly.

You can Google Dumanzi Lodge, close to Northam. The lodge is quite far from the Bush type camp site. No electricity or cell phone reception. Donkey for hot water and flush toilet. Nice game viewing on your own time and vehicle.

Here's what I have but these are specifically rustic / bush camps; http://getoutgo.co.za/campsites-map/

I've pretty much ran out of campsites in a 3h radius of JHB/PTA so also keen on new ones to try

I do follow that thread as well as your YouTube and website postings thanks Christoff.
I have been looking at the Vredefort Dome area and places near the Vaal river / dam that aren't just "fishing" spots. Amazingly there seems to be very little info for camping spots south of Jo-Burg that aren't the "resort" type of place that I generally try to stay clear of or places that seem to mainly cater for the fishermen. The most promising paces look like the Suikerbos Nature Resort ( http://www.suikerbos.co.za/default.aspx ) or Soetdoring (https://www.soetdoringvakansieplaas.co.za/ ) but I haven't found anyone that has been to either.
The reason for looking south of Jo-burg is to get away from having to brave the Friday/Sunday traffic north of Pretoria and in the Harties area when trying to escape for a weekend.

    Hi Paul,

We went to Camp Riverlake at Lindequesdrift, between Parys and the Barrage a few weeks ago. Can camp or they have oldish chalets they looked quite reasonable from the outside.

    https://www.camp-riverlake.co.za

They are on the river so fishing possible, we tried but didn't catch anything at all, fish were spawning apparently. Day was also very very windy at times. They do have a man made dam which is stocked with fish, 'catch and release' swimming pool and other stuff.

    Maybe give it a try?

    Roy

I think Paul meant a place that does not cater for papgooiers..

I'm also keen to find a spot here. The vredefort is beautiful, and as you say, the traffic is much better than going up north
