Default What to do: Low Mileage V8 Hummer H3 left hand drive

    Good day all

A family member of mine has a 2010 Hummer V8 with less than 60 000 on the clock. From what I gather is that the vehicle is still in excellent condition. Unfortunately it is left hand drive.

A bit of history from what I know: The vehicle was imported from the USA together with some others to be delivered to a client in Angola where they travel on the right hand side of the road. However, this deal went sour when the cars were already at Delta Windhoek. You cannot register a left hand drive vehicle in Namibia anymore, so they Hummers were sold off to customers in Botswana. One of there is also a customer of my uncle in Gobabis. My uncle bought one of these Hummers from said customer, but kept it registered in Botswana. He has had it for a couple of years now, and they absolutely love the car. The Namibian authorities have made it difficult for him however, and he has decided (against his heart I believe) to get rid of the car.

I have in the past done a bit of asking around to convert the car to right hand drive, but a proper job will be in the region of R140-150k. Therefore I believe the only option will be to try and sell the car in Botswana.

How difficult will it be to try and export to Angola or Mozambique? On what side of the road do they drive in Moz? I am sure there are some people on the forum that knows more of the procedures in these areas.

    Any other ideas or suggestions?

They drive on the same side of the road as us here in SA in Moz.

Okey, so Moz is not a viable option then. And I believe in Angola nothing gets done without a bit of persuasion money. Not really in the mood for that...

    Hi Pieter

I wish I could help you with this. Importing it should not be a problem as the vehicle is secondhand you will not have to worry about import taxes on the vehicle.

The concern I would have is about registering the vehicle, as it is left hand drive. But then again I have noticed more and more left hand drive vehicles on the road... so maybe it is still possible to register them.

Note: I am no expert on the import/registration laws so can only relay what I've heard and seen.

    Hope it helps somewhat

Hi Quantum. Unfortunately not. They have gone down every legal avenue they know of in Namibia with no luck. This is why they are selling it. AFAIK the registration rules are similar if not more stringent in South Africa. If that vehicle was right hand drive I would have made a hufe effort to try and buy it, as it still is in excellent condition.

An ex-colleague purchased one of these mentioned H3s from Auas. He drove it for a few years and eventually decided to sell it after being unable to register it here. He made use of a tour operator in Botswana to swing it for him afaik. He paid a hefty amount for the service, but at least he got it sold

We'll be looking for a couple of left hand drive examples of Americana later this year.... I doubt they would last longer than any carnet ... Still to be confirmed...

so some of the toyota guys still want to lynch me after that thing with the 60 series cruiser.

then there are the Isuzu guys, but it wasn't a brilliant example of a Trooper.

oh yeah. There were those jeeps.... and the Chevs.... so many Fords....

The car gods are watching their equivalent of Dexter and he looks a lot like me....

but I have to say... I've never done an H3 before.... mmmmmmmmm....
