Default OpenStreetMap Topo - BaseCamp, Garmin and Android

Here is how I installed OpenStreetMap Topo Southern Africa on my Garmin GPS, Android Tablet and BaseCamp for Windows. It is free

    Download from : http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/af...-topo-routable.

    Bottom of the page....

You will need something like 7zip to extract the .7z files

NOTE: You need to have Garmin BaseCamp installed + your Garmin GPS connected.

You should now see the following extraxted files....

    Execute the install batch file.

The OpenStreetMap Topo map should now be available in BaseCamp.

With you Garmin GPS connected, select "Install Maps" (see image above). Follow the instructions until it is done with the installation/ transfer.

    To be continued .....

Browse the [GPS]\Garmin folder. You should see the new map.

You are now done with the GPS. The new map should be available from your map setup.

Make a copy of that .img file and paste it somewhere (Desktop). Disconnect GPS.

    Nice, Kobus, thanks.

Is it worth doing? I'm running a Montana with Garmins topo maps (and T4A).

@ZS6HDV - If you already have the Garmin Topo maps, it is not worth it. The mountains and rivers will not move soon.

Once you have OruxMaps installed, plug in the USB to PC cable connection.

From Explorer (on PC) browse the Android for ...\oruxmaps\mapfiles. Copy that .img file (from Desktop) and paste into the 'mapfiles' folder. Disconnect when done.

Open the OruxMaps App. Select the flaggy thingy and then "Switch Map"

    Change from "online" to "offline".

Select the "Africa South OSM Topo".

    Done!

You now have OpenStreetMap Topo maps on your Android.

    @ Prof... Thanks.

If you really push it you can get your old garmin .gpx tracks into OruxMaps . If needed I can assist.

    This seems great!
What do you do if you don't have the garmin for those first steps?

You only want the .img file to install on OruxMaps ?

Create a folder on a USB flash drive and name it : Garmin . Open Basecamp and make the OSM Map the active map. Then "Install Maps". BaseCamp will send it to the Garmin folder on the USB Flash drive.

Kobus - Many thanks for posting this.

I am surprised at the detail on these Open Street maps == street names - restaurants etc. Far superior to Google on the few instances I have looked at and compared.

I installed on Base Camp on the PC and the tracks work fine in my 6 year old Garmin.

I could not install Open Street maps to the card in the Garmin as Windows 10 says the tiny SD card is write protected?

There is no switch on the side of these small cards. Any advice will be appreciated.

Load JaVaWa GMTK and JaVaWa device an dyou can sort it all out. Move maps onto JaVaWa then insert a new Sd card into your GPS and load the maps back onto the new card.
Then download any maps ie: OSM topo Africa routable and load onto Basecamp. Connect GPS and add the OSM or any other to the new card on the GPS.
But keep a full backup of maps on JaVaWa

Once done JaVaWa gives you the facility to move your saved maps from GPS card into the device hardware or visa versa. Plus onto any new SD card

Just wondering why I have a locked card --Does Garmin Topo./ Street maps/T4A lock these cards?
