    Default Maputo bypass road.

    Hi,

Has anyone got any info regarding the dirt road that goes around Maputo?

    How far is it?
    Is it quicker?
    Where exactly is it?

Use N4 towards Maputo and after first toll gate turn off towards Moamba. Go into Moamba and use your gps (put in your destination via Moamba) which should show 2 dirt roads. First turnoff is slightly shorter ( by about 20 km, second option slightly further and includes driving on a railtrack for about 200m

You skip entire Maputo and all those cops, but dont drive at night, never in Moz
And check on weather, heavy rain in that area dont go there unless you have Unimog

    Thanks Julius.

Looking at T4A, would this be correct:

    1. From KZN, through Swaziland, left at 2nd T-junction onto R251 to Moamba (instead of right to Boane and then Maputo)
    2. Dirt to Xinavane

We drove the R251 last week on our way from Bara to Komatiport. The road goes through a large area of sugar plantations. The road is very bad it was once tarred but now is mostly gravel and pot holes. So you have to take it easy.
The road saves going through Maputo....

Ring road is a modern way to avoid going through mid city and allthe normal traffic. Problem is this is where Moz police hang out and hassle travellers endlessly

Did that exact route last weekend. That section is some of the worst roads I have travelled on. About 20Km before the highway it becomes a nightmare. Will I do it again, not likely.
Once through Moamba it remains rough but acceptable for another 50Km or so, thereafter no problem.
Please stick to the speed limits or you will end up with policeman plod at your window.

On the way into Moz we took the dirt road [just after the 1st toll] via Mohamba, we followed the dirt road almost to Sabie and then through to, a few km before the Bilene turn off. The road was very corrugated and even our Nissan safari took a beating.
On the way back we followed the N4 tar road by passing Maputo and onto the N1 to Kamartipoort. Its a much better route and except for a small detour, it was fine. It may be a few km extra but shorter in travel time. We kept just under the speed limit and were never stopped once. Many many speed cops on the route. We left Inhambane at 05:00 and arrived in Kempton park at 19:00.
It was pleasant enough, but the local people are really desperate. Barra lodge is not operational. No fish around the shore line, unless you go snorkeling. Hard to locate bait [sardines].

To get to the ring road. Cross the matola river bridge. If you look to your left you will see the dirt Road. To get to it you have to turn right just after the bridge, follow the dirt Road next to the main road and drive underneath the bridge till you are on the ring road. There is a detour further on where they are building the railway bridge. Remember the ring road is a 60 kmph zone so stick to it.
