I looked at the specs of the newer Tritons 2.4 diesel & they aren't that much more than the old 2.5. The Fiat might have an older motor but it produces only a tiny bit less power than the latest Hilux (1 kW & 20 Nm). The 6th gear is likely to only offer slightly better consumption. I drive the 5 speed & it's perfectly fine.

The way the reengineer the Mitsubishi product is cool. I am sad to read this from a journalist who test driven the Fullback: "The typical raised body straight line drift was present, but you’re hard pressed to find a double cab that doesn’t suffer from this off-road trait." This was one of my biggest problems with the previous Triton.

    But Fiat can?

This article is on IOL NEWS.

Mitsubishi’s new all-aluminium 2.4-litre 4N15 four-cylinder turbodiesel has outputs of 133kW (up 2kW) and 430Nm (up 30Nm) thanks to a variable geometry turbocharger that offers better response from lower in the rev range. The modern new engine’s also more expensive, which is another reason why the new Triton is currently unable to be priced competitively against market giants like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.Mitsubishi imports its vehicles to SA and doesn’t earn the cost-saving government rebates that Toyota and Ford receive for assembling their bakkies locally. The all-new Triton follows the trend toward more refined and SUV-like bakkies. It’s roomier and quieter than the current Triton, with higher quality cabin finishes and a full colour multimedia display.

I have to add. The fiat has an easy select gearbox and not super select.

The 'Corolla Quest' comparison is not a bad thing, in fact it can be the opposite (I would trust that drivetrain more than a certain (current) bakkie) My reference was more as to indicate how/why they can reduce costs and offer value. Interestingly the new Hilux is offered with the old D4D in some South American countries - not a bad move imo!!

I disagree on the 6th spd vs 5spd issue though, all the ratios are changed and really make use of the engine (if well matched) drive a modern bakkie like the Hilux or even better the Amarok and you will see what I mean - but it comes at an obvious higher price point!!

For R470k there isn't another Bakkie that compete. It isn't like the 5 speed & 2.5 hasn't proven itself & 4wd hi is hardly needed in a LDV

    Some more pics.

    Interesting reverse camera mounting.

Between the front wheels is a plasic box covered by a plastic guard that sits quite low. Definitely needs more protection IMO.

Good looking, good value vehicle and one of the last with a manual range stick (for those that it matters to - I dont mind buttons)

I am really glad somebody is sating a price war with the bakkies.

I think this will bring balance back to the bakkie market.

Btw.. I think those prices exclude Vat...
    Or
Their sales people are really stupid..

    I test drive a 4x4..

This is the quotation I received:

And the guy kept asking me questions on how stuff worked (seriously Fiat, train your staff).. Then his manager kept telling me that my Triton looks much tougher, maybe I should keep it..

    Lol

    I agreed..
