    Default Take my son camping

I want to take my son camping for one night.

Just us, a fire a tent and some braaivleis, marshmellows, beer for dad, you get the idea.

He just turned 6and we haven't really done something like that before

Preffereably not in a caravan park, but more roughing it - it has to be safe though, and not too far from Jozi

Any ideas, and can someone point me in the right direction in terms of venues?

Your back yard will be just as good as anywhere else for a 6 year old.

    plus one for Marakele.
Both of you will enjoy it to sit in front of the tent in the morning and watch the animals passing by!

Guys, I wasn't joking with the back yard suggestion.

Jhb to Thabazimbi or Pilansberg for 1 night is a bit OTT.

He is six years old, unless the OP stays in a flat or crammed complex, he can pitch a tent, make a fire, and have a blast in a back yard.

Weekend or a few days adventure is a different ball game altogether.

    Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies, will check out Marakele, and maybe stay for 2 nights....looks awesome

Fluffy - good idea, and unfortunately I do live in a small place (who in jhb doesn't) and with a steep inclined yard, so no pitching tents for me in the backyard, and we cant see the stars from where we are anyways

Want him to experience the great outdoors like we did growing up, hell, we rode our bmx's on a friday afternoon and pitched a tent n the forest or on the beach and surfed in the mornings early when waking up often when we were kids, something very few kids actually get to do these days..

I know you been serious Fluffy, and you have point, no doubt.
But Joburg to Marakele will not turn into an overland trip either.

Took my wife & 3 year old camping last weekend... Did Sani Pass, showed him all the mountains etc, then stopped in at Cobham to camp for the night, braai'd & built on 'camping' skills I've already thought him. Caught the sunrise on Sunday, played along the river, swam etc. Apart from the usual niggle that every 3yo has, we all had an absolute jol.
The experience was well worth the 3hr drive from home...

Very different to the 'camping' we do in our back yard.

6yr old and a first time Dad/son thing with plenty years to come - I would also look at the good old Warmbaths resort. Also did this when the kids were young. Safe, lots of running around area, swimming in outside and inside warm pools, slides etc, a Spur for ice-cream/milk shakes. Shops close by for anything forgotten. The wilder stuff can wait

Cool. When I saw the Sandton location I was thinking a hectare with small dam and ducks and a Phantom.

Marakele is an excellent choice, it has a safe camping area with spotless ablutions and is unfenced. Inside the camp there are enough to keep you busy for two days but an early morning drive up the mountain is a must. When the vultures come from their roosting side to go hunting they pass over at tree top height and is an amazing sight, the view from up there is almost as if you are on top of the world and the description "garden of mountains" begin to make more sense.
If you are lucky you might experience rhino up close and personal just remember they are accustomed to humans but not tame, treat them with great respect and your son will have an experience he would never forget.

It is a leisurely 2 1/2 hour drive from jobeg and if anything is forgotten or a hamburger is on the cards Thaba is only 16km from Marakele. A youngster of 6 is long overdue for this kind of trip, I guarantee you my grandie will have his first camping trip with oupa looong before the age of 6, problem is ouma will insist on tagging along. I clearly remember my first trip with my father, i was also about 6 and it was to Margate fishing off the bridge over the lagoon. I would drive to the moon to have another day like that one with him.
