Default GV blow out on high way

On my way to Paarl yesterday I experienced a major tyre failure - sidewall blowout in my left rear tyre while travelling at 120 km/h on the highway.

Besides the noise, like a helicopter was about to land on my roof, the GV was very stable and I could safely negotiate the traffic to the side and pull off on the verge to change the wheel.

I can only praise again the road manners of the GV and the additional safety of permanent 4WD coupled with ESP!

I have been using my 18" HT road tyres (maxtrek ingens A1) for a couple of weeks, and my spare is 1) not the same brand and 2)has a rather nasty gouge in the sidewall ..... I inherited these with the car and they are probably the cheapest 22560R18 tyres you can find - so now I had to continue my drive to Paarl and then back later in the dark with a substandard wheel that I was not 100% sure was the same size as the rest. Stupid!

I won't use these tyres/wheels again and will stick with my 16" combination again, and make sure that my spare is a tyre that I have absolute faith in continuing my journey with, and that I will practise 5 tyre rotation to keep all within roughly the same size limits! Life is too short for dumb choices. .....

On the flip side, driving on the highway at 100 to Paarl and back I got my best ever fuel consumption 9.4l/100km for the trip 😊

You def drove over something, you can see the mark next to the cut on the sidewall, might be from the flat tyre running untill you stopped.... glad you are ok....

Thanks guys....to be honest I was actually very happy with the tyres, they ran well, were quiet and handled very well in the wet ... but have lost faith now.....never had an issue like that in 33 years of driving.

Only damage to tyre besides sidewall tear was from running flat and then off on to the verge...there was nothing in the road.

    Hectic. Glad you're okay!

A blowout at speed has so many ways it could go wrong, sounds like you handled it like a pro 8)

Glad you're ok Dave, never realised the pros of having permanent 4x4 and ESP in such a situation. Good to know, thanks!

Do you have any idea what caused the tyre to fail like that?

No idea Johan ....I do not know how they were driven by previous owner. I only used them on road and never deflated.

Could be a deformity, pinched spot, old tyres ...who knows. ...I certainly never hit anything with them to cause damage.

What's the age of the tyres according to the date code on the side?

Could even be because I gave only driven about 3000km on them in the last two years...they have otherwise been stored (under cover out of the sun) ....who knows.
