    Default Buying a BMW Z3

Good day fellow members. I am in the process of buying a BMW Z3. Will be used as a Sunday leisure car. The 2.8l manual 1999 model. Any issues, mechanical problems I should be concerned about?

Tighten up the suspension. Feed it some steroids and you will have a read scorcher.

I prefer the softer lines to the Z4.

    Radiator expansion bottle gets brittle,
some of the cars have a plastic water pump housing that also can fail

I was also thinking of it, but a friend of mine has one and took me for a drive, now im not EXTREMELY tall, about just average tall, 1.90M and my head was sticking over the windshield.

Then I decided what about the M Coupé? WHAT a sex car!! And again this time my head had nowhere to go so I looked like a giraffe in a horse trailer

Z3 has a retro look which the newer roadsters lack. Its a feeling of nostalgia when life was simpler and the cars built with passion.

Absolutely agree, but they couldve made it bigger, comparre it to a TVR tuscan from the same era for example

I've had 2 of these engines in the past and both started losing coolant through the head gasket past 10 years old, so check for that very carefully.

Pull the head, have it ported at a proper performance shop and fit a branch. Then do the pipe, the cam and the chip.

Then you will have covered all the bases.

I doubt there will be anything wrong with the engine.
I've never seen a BMW with severe engine issues even after 100k plus.
Mine is 26 years (okay 6-cyl 3.5L) and has never been opened, clutch still original no oil leaks or consumption and runs like a torpedo on steroids.

Okay, had it from new and looked after 223k km on clock.

If the vehicle looks well preserved I wouldn't worry, bigger ccm engines are less challenged, but a Z3 is not a youngster's racing machine but a week-end leisure toy so abuse is not very likely.

I would only open the engine if you suspect something wrong, after all it's a BMW.

I've got the same one in dark blue, gave it a through going over from front to back by a bww specialist, major sevice and all oils / fluids changed also fitted a new water pump. Could do with a windshield for the back head rests, I heard it cuts down wind noise considerably.

Also fitted a S/S free flow exhaust from Powerflow - burbles along at low rpm but sounds great under hard accleration - bit is a bit hard to hear when the Alpine music player with amp is booming at full volume - love it, Very happy with mine.

This the reason for that "real" hairdressers car you drive Johan?

The head is fine, its ported already - it needs the 325i Intake manifold - you can do the rest if you want. I find drving with the ASC button off the rear end steps out very very quickly - need to be careful.

Yep, have to agree, this has a rounded sweeping look the Z4 just totally misses and that long bonnet with the side grills....
