I had my prostrate checked two weeks ago.

Is it normal for the doctor to hold your shoulders with both hands while doing the examination...........?

Perfectly fine, esp. if you were wearing your pink shirt, white linen trousers and Jesus-sandals again!

Unfortunatly the biggest myth surrounding a prostate checkup is that "the finger druk" is still the only way to do it, 90% of men can't even imagine going through it, it will be way too imbarrassing, so they simply never have it checked out. The other day while having some blood tests done for other stuff I told the doc to sommer check the prostate as well, a extra tube of blood drawn, a extra tick on the form going to the blood lab and that's it, done.

Yes they check your PSA levels, my dad's been battling this for years, gone thought various treatments. It's now spread and he's undergoing a radiotherapy course.
We're hoping that he will be with is for many more years to come.

But yes a simple blood test is all it takes.

Both the finger and the blood test is the proper way of screening. I had the finger test a couple of times and it is really not neccesary to stress about it! Very quick. Awkward but nothing more!

My father in law did the blood test religiously every year....they never picked up his cancer (estimated to be there for 3 years already) it's critical to do both the finger and blood test

    Default Vra 'n ou man.

That simple blood test is good, but I'm afraid the old finger trick is not without merit either.

PSA levels are different for different people. A trend in PSA levels add to the equation, and the finger adds more. Eventually a biopsy is the true test, but it is not without its risks either.

If the finger trick worries you, not as bad as it sounds and it is over in seconds.
If not, you have other problems....

Correct. A "DRE" will pick up issues other than cancer that might be causing enlargement or abnormality and be a direct threat to your health. A PSA blood test checks only cancer.

Awkward indeed ... and uncomfortable but not painful.

Yes guys, get it checked out. It's one of those that if caught early is okay.

P.S. Being a woman, I have to add this...do you guys know what we go through every year?

This is unfortunately not true. DRE is a much more accurate way to pick up abnormalities and then PSA is helpfull in further diagnosis. The problem is PSA may rise with a simple prostatitis and may keep low even with malignancy present.

My wife has refused me to accompany her into the room. As a good husband I went in with her while waiting for the doctor. Curiosity got me and here I was looking at funny things that would be useful as a borewors tongs, picking up instruments and asking the wife to say " Aah! For the doctor " if you catch on.

Well I was escorted out the room by a very red face nurse and unimpressed doctor.

Here is info from Gunhog off an old thread:

If the performance of a biopsy would have required suspicious transrectal ultrasonography findings, nearly 40% of the tumors would have been missed. We conclude that the use of PSA in conjunction with digital rectal examination enhances early prostate cancer detection. Prostatic biopsy should be considered if either the PSA level is greater than 4 micrograms/l or digital rectal examination is suspicious for cancer, even in the absence of abnormal transrectal ultrasonography findings."
