    Default Manual or Auto

I'm Looking at a new 132kw 4 Motion Highline, The sales manager is trying to convince me to go the Auto route, says it is in higher demand and should have a better resale value should i decide to sell. I plan to keep the car once paid off so its a long term concern. Should be getting one in the next few days to drive as i haven't driven the auto. Some feedback on the pros and cons of auto vs manual would be appreciated

If you want to buy a 4x4, buy the manual like Albert. For anything else the auto.

Think there are also 4x2 autos. I have a manual but I test drove the auto to see what all the fuss was about. I often think of that auto... Esp in traffic. One of each would do

I have both. I bought the auto as I did not like the permanent gear changes all the time. The manual came past and needed another work vehicle and as safety is a priority the dc was a good choice. Cameron was going to drive it in anyway.

So the Manual is standard, The Auto has some changes: Winch [under bumper], Spots, LED bar, Canopy [alu], drawer system, dual battery, 50l water tank, fridge, OME suspension, Rock Sliders.

Both run 18" std in town with AT on the Manual and HT on the auto. Got 16"265 75 Maxxis bighorns for offroad holidays and Playing.

So here is my thinking. Anything you add influences your fuel consumption. That includes spotlights as It affects the aerodynamics, even slightly. The lift also increases the frontal area and the weight of the other stuff also kills the consumption.

    Why I chose the auto.
    Permanent 4wd
    Amazing gearbox
    Always in the right gear.
    SUV like ride
    point and go
It all boils down to the gearbox and permanent 4wd.

What would I have liked more or shortcomimgs.
Lowrange, I will still pay good money for lowrange, even if I will never need it.

What I like about the manual is the lowrange. And the Fuel consumption. And the woema. My manual is much lighter than the auto and much faster. Yes my son plays with me. It is much faster especially from 3rd Gear. Fuel I get 9KM/L and the manual gives me same road 12km/l

But when Cameron gets in my car his first comment would be "jislaaik daai auto is lekker om te ry"

Coming to lowrange. I have towed my Explorer through Bots and Namibia, Through the pans where others got stuck, From hunters road, kasane, moremi, Savuti, 3rd bridge, Guma, Swakop and trails, trips and holidays and never needed lowrange on the auto. But still would have liked the low just for incase.

The manual with low is nice. Still like the auto. Fuel worse on auto.....still drive it more. Resale? yes please. I bought the manual for a good price. If it was auto the price would have been at least 70 000 more

So you are going to keep us in suspense for - how long........

Spending too much time with DVR are you. Three thousand posts with text that read like a Steven Kings thriller and he lost the last chapter where he was supposed to reveal what killed his Jeep 3.8 V6 motor.

Depends on what you want to do with it. Technical trails get the manual. Not so technical trails and touring get the auto. Just did 1200 km trip for the day. What a pleasure in the auto...

Dunno, the trail would have to be uber technical and the driver really experienced for it to beat an average Joe in an auto.

I little lesson on left foot braking in the auto and no way a manual would compare, for all but the most extreme conditions and experienced driver.

How does the auto do in reverse in conditions that Low range would normally be required? Assuming ok on the basis that I haven't seen any comments on that? Would love to take the auto on a trail. (In fact I would like to take mine on a trail as all I seem to do is drive in town at the moment )

I don't think there is a trail where the auto will battle because of lack of low range. It will get stuck because of width or lack of ride height long before that.

I have said it before and will say it again. On all the trails I have been, I did all the obstacles as easily as all the other 4x4s did with low range. The very effective t/c helps a lot, no doubt.

As far as revers goes, some people has experienced problems, when having a big load (boats, etc), on a steep uphill.

At Sandwani, I reversed up a 25 or 30 degree (can't remember) hill with absolutely no fuss.

For me the decider between auto and manul, is the fact that the auto is permanent 4wd. It is the most sure footed car I have ever driven, especially when the surface is slippery.
