Default stars and the milky way

Anyone into shooting in very low light? I have been trying my hand at this genre.

I took this image on a dark night with good stars.

    Very nice Kimball
How small was the light you used in the tent?

I quite enjoy this too. Some of mine:

Great photos Peter! This is quite addictive....

I have a Nikon D7000 and have just purchased a Samyang 14mm f2.8 which I am really enjoying. Fully manual lens - so takes a little getting used to. The settings for the tent shot -

    f2.8
    iso 3200
white balance - cool white, fluorescent
    30 seconds exposure

I used a single candle setup behind the tent. I tried the candle inside the tent, but it was too bright! The secret is dark skies, no moon. I have access to skies without light pollution - live in southern Namibia, so that helps....

    Baie nice!

Basie van Zyl did an excellent write up on how to do it just before his death but sadly I see it is not available on his website any longer but found this link

Kimball, I really like the second one. That is a stunning result for the D7000, I must be honest I never good results anywhere near that good with the crop-frame. Possibly light pollution playing a role, I have never managed to get that many stars at such low total exposure values. This is a big part of the reason I went for the D750 rather than the D7200.

I also rather fancied that Samyang lens, but was concerned about reports of bad quality control (one guy I spoke to tried four samples that all had IQ problems before he gave up), and then when I had lined up somebody to go and test to pick out a good sample, they had run out of stock, so I went for the Tamron 15-30mm f2.8, which I am very impressed with so far.

The photos on post #3 are all 30 seconds, f2.8 and between 5000 and 8000 ISO.

Thanks Peter, I will have a look this weekend.

Unfortunately the second photo is not mine, a friend of mine got it! I can get close to this effect which is apparently the correct sky colour. The light balance is set to daylight or around 5000k. I think light pollution is a major one, you will have to come and visit us here in Namibia!

I had a look a Basie van Zyls portfolio - very, very good! Something I want to try, especially the Kokerboom in the foreground. The Kokerboom looks like it belongs in a science fiction movie anyway, so fits in perfectly with astro...

I have heard that 3500K is about the right colour, but sometimes I like to leave it a bit bluer.

I agree about the Kokerboom, but my own goal is to get a baobab. Preferably on Kubu Island.Something like this: http://www.markdumbleton.com/botswan...e-african-sky/

    That is truly spectacular!

A baobab is also on my radar then, just a pity there are none close, although we are planning a trip to Zambia soon.....
