Going to the Drakensberg on Sunday for a week, if I'm not too drunk in the evenings I might just point a camera at these shiny blobs.

Thanks - just because I'm a photography noob - let me ask:

    Why F2.8?

I'm assuming the "large" aperture helps allowing in more light but for this type of picture, using this aperture contradicts what I've been reading about depth of field.

Shouldn't F2.8 give you a really shallow depth of field? Surely you would want both the tower and the stars to be sharp...

    Great photo btw!

Default stars and the milky way

Pantoffel, you're principal is correct, but with super wides, the dof is much greater than on normal or telelens at same f-stop.
Starpoint shoots, require short exposure, max 20-30s or will get star trail blur due to earths rotation.
Therefore need to shoot as wide open as possible, with as wide lens as possible at as low iso as possible.
The bigger the field of view, the less pronounced the mivement of the stars are.
Usually use hyperfocal distance of lens for these type photo's which means anything from this distance to infinity will be in focus. This seems to be about 2m for a 14mm lens, so pylon was likely about 2m away at nearest point & the rest will be in focus.

    See the link below.

    Great photo, Kimbal.

    Nothing much to add.
Yes, after 30 seconds on the 14mm, you start to see star trails. The sweet spot on the focus ring on the Samyang is about 1mm before the infinity mark. Every lens would be slightly different and its best to understand where this point is on your lens before you go into the dark.
I also use the self timer set to 2s to trigger my shot. Some people use a remote trigger, but the self timer works well for me.

Default stars and the milky way

My shots are with a 15-85. At 15mm it's 3.5, so not a hellova lot slower than the 14mm samyang, and uber sharp.

My issue is my camera, but hoping to get the 60Da in the new year.
