Cool Botswana: Moremi and Savuti in July

    Good day

I am part of a group of 14 adults and two children under 6, that want to travel through Botswana in July 2016. We have done most of our reservations but had to wait for 2 nights Moremi and 1 in Savuti till August as requested by the admin departement in question.

We ended up only getting 1 campsite (we need 3) in Moremi (Xaxanaka).
If I understand the Internet correct we may not enter the park as day visitors. Does anyone have ideas what we can do?

(We booked for Chobe the night before we would have been on your way to Savuti, and after Savuti and Moremi, we have already booked in Maun)

    Mavis,

You can enter as day visitors set-up the camp as per your reservation, then pay the overnight camping fee at the exit the day you leave the park (or whilst you are there and pass through the gate for game drive).
The camp sites in Xakanaxa are big enough for your party if you are a bit economical with the set-up.

You won't have an issue as the operator (Kwalate Safaris) is making more money than initially paid.
Sort it out with the staff at Xakanaxa gate inside the park, then you have a receipt when leaving the park at South Gate.

You wouldnt be advocating going in as a day visitor
    Sleep over
Then pay your fees on the way out the next day

    Maybe I misread your post
    BUT
    maybe not

Firstly, you are 16 people - which means you need two campsites. So, you're missing one only - but in two very popular areas.

A suggestion : Call the operators for all four campsites in the Moremi and the campsites in Savuti - and WAITLIST yourselves (they'll call you if anything opens). Do this early, as the waitlist list grows ever longer. But I presume that there will be cancellations over the next year. Southgate campsite might have space left as they are usually the last ones to go. And consider Linyati in the Chobe park as opposed to Savuti as they fill up slower.

Note : you can drive directly from Kasane to Moremi in one day. A long day, but manageable. Just keep this in mind. So, (depending on which date you have actually got the Xakanaxa around to your Kasane and Maun bookings)... a suggestion would be to book KHWAI area for the time inbetween in the meantime (Dijara, Tshaa or Khwai Community) as these campsites still have space for July next year. This means you will route from Kasane to Khwai to Xakanaxa to Maun - which works well. (the khwai area is also stunning)

You can daytrip into any Botswana park but you need to be out when the gates close around 6pm.

A big +1000 for Tshaa or Dijara. I would rather stay there.

I've been in this predicament a few time before and have sorted it out this way.
The catch is, when you appear at the gate in Xakanaxa and speak to the people there they make a plan. It appeared on many occasions that despite "fully booked" advise from office there were empty camp sites available even when we volunteered to use the space between officially demarcated camp sites along the road to the boat station (they call them reserve sites).

Reason being, break downs of people booked and never showed up or delayed trips of visitors due to various circumstances. It even happened that people book more than one camp site and then decided to crowd together as they found them too far apart.
This option does not work via the booking office as they are never aware of such availability, only the management staff on site know when there is a no-show.
