I thought thats exactly what this tread is about. Go and read the OP first before criticizing.

You missed all the fun, all the post that suggested anything but a Defender got zapped yesterday

The OP asked for advice about Defenders, not suggestions for alternatives.

I still believe R200K is the right area to buy a defender in, lowish mileage, not too old, not to well used.

Then of course it becomes Defender or Disco 3, (in my case) for that money.

I would reccomend a 110 Pickup for the type of work and environment he will find himself in.
    Something like this:

Defender spares are reasonably cheap and easily available allover Africa.

Wear items are suspension bushes and panhard rod bushes: polybush kits are available

Drivetrain is reasonably robust if maintained (like any vehicle).
Older Defender 110s have a Salisbury rear axle which is a licensed copy of the Dana60.
KAM and Ashcroft sell upgraded side shafts, center diffs and axle diff components.

Gearboxes and Transfer cases are largely transferable between Defender, D1 and D2 so again, spares not an issue.

Body parts apart from the bulkhead, door pillars and the chassis are aluminium alloy and can't rust. It's a giant meccano set.

Steel bits will eventually rust if submersed often and not treated. Most body parts from even a Series 3 will fit a Defender.

Some Defender 110s had galvanised chassis.

What can go wrong on a Defender that can spell its complete demise:

    - terminal chassis rust
    - a bent chassis

Even that can be rectified, as a body-off/body-on process can be done with a fork-lift and some basic mechanic skills.

That's all. Everything else can be repaired and replaced.

As a bush vehicle, the 300TDi 110 is probably the most robust vehicle ever made.

Try and buy a running Defender under R50k: that animal just doesn't exist.
Why? becuase of the points I mentioned above.

The vehicle just cannot die. Regardless of what is wrong, it doesn't cost a whole bunch to get it going again.

Some nice bargains and just to clarify: The Defender was only the official name after 1990. So my statement stands.

If I was buying another 110, I'd buy the V8, sell or mothball the engine, and then drop in either a bigger V8 or else a Jap TDi engine.

    Reliability?

I have had no issues with my Defender ever - and that's after drowning it, partially rolling it over and generally abusing it on trails etc - I had far more issues with other makes of vehicles. The landy now needs all the suspension bushes replaced as it squeeks, but that's it. If you look after it, it will look after you.

    2003/4 Mitsubishi Pajero 3.2DID - 130 000km - Clutch, Flywheel, Brake Booster, Diesel Pump and injectors = R80K
2007 Mitsubishi Colt 2.8 - 74 000km - Both front wheels just fell of when turning into my driveway as balljoints just broke off = R5K
    2014 Toyota Hilux - 20 000km - All shocks just collapsed
    2014 Isuzu KB250 Dteq - 40 000km - Turbo, Radiator, front suspension

Care to come and play/challenge my town hopper/fashion statement?

In six years I've only had a cracked head, which was a known issue on the early TD5s
Other than that it's normal wear and tear and service items.
I've pretty much done what 90 inches has and more, including baboons, Rampai pass and a river trip to name a few.
