    KENYA INTRODUCES MANDATORY
    ONLINE VISA APPLICATIONS
Starting from 2nd July 2015, the government of Kenya will introduce electronic visa application. Tourists wishing to visit Kenya need to apply as follows:
Visit the electronic visa page at www.ecitizen.go.ke
    Select Register as a Visitor
As part of this process, you will receive a confirmation email that you need to click on to verify and confirm your registration
At this point, you will be asked to UPLOAD A DIGITAL PASSPORT PHOTO (Maximum size 500 px by 500 px)
Once logged in, select Department of Immigration Services
    Select Submit Application
    Select Kenyan Visa
Select the type of visa (visitor) and read the instructions carefully
Complete the application form – please note that incomplete applications will be rejected and you will lose your processing fees
You will need a scan of the main page of your passport (with your name, date of birth and other information)
You will need to re-upload your passport photo
Pay using your Visa card, MasterCard or other debit card
Await your approval which will be sent to you by email. This could take up to 7days so ensure that you plan in advance
Once you have received the email advising that your visa is approved, log back into your ecitizen account and download your visa.
Print a copy of your visa to present to the immigration officer at your point of entry into Kenya
    Some things to remember:
The visa process takes up to one week and must be completed in advance
You will need a scan of your passport and passport photo
Approval and issuance of the visa does not guarantee entry into Kenya
Any form of business or employment on a visitor’s visa is an offence

See the reply on that blog from the KATO Secretariat (Kenya Association of Tour Operators) which states that there will be a grace period up to the end of August 2015 whereby visas will continue to be issued at airports (and, presumably, land borders). This grace period is so that stakeholders and, presumably, the tour operators have time to organise the system, and, no doubt, lobby the Kenyan government.

I will contact the Kenyan High Commission in London to find out more details.

What is current status regarding visas on arrival at border posts? Do we really need to apply online and if so how much time does it take? 7 days or less?

    Thanks!

Just got a 3 month visa for 50 USD at airport, initially I was going to get one between Kenya/Tanzania but then didn't have the time to drive as my previous visa was expiring soon.
Apparently no hassles at border posts..
Check with the AA to be sure.

Thanks for such a quick response! Interesting that you were able to get the visa on arrival at the airport, cause most online information says that that is not possible any more.

The online e-visa process seems quite tedious so I think I will try my chances at Lunga-Lunga border.

    Etienne,

We got a 3 month tourist visa when re-entering Kenya by road at the Moyale border post with Ethiopia a month ago. This is the southbound leg of our trip heading home.

When on the northbound leg 5/6 months ago we obtained a multi-entry East African visa at the Tanzanian/ Rwanda border. This covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya, but not Tanzania.

I spoke to the senior Kenyan border officials at Moyale as I had previously been under the impression that they would only grant South Africans a one month visa at point of entry. They said the situation had reverted back to the previous visa policy for South Africans hence the 3 months we were given. So, for now, it appears that you will get a 3 month visa at whichever point of entry you use.

For final confirmation contact the local Kenyan Consulate in Pretoria. Their regulations are also updated on their website, but there is information overload there! Perhaps have a look at my blog www.slowdonkey.com

FYI I got a visa at the border and it was quite easy. Apparently Kenya has suspended the need for applying for visas online, both systems coexist for now at least.

For SA citizens yes, for many others it is 50$ for a 3 month tourist visa.

Please see this thread which gives the up-to-date visa requirements on Kenya. I even had a personal phone call from the Kenya High Commission in London to confirm all this - plus numerous emails from various high level contacts in Kenya, including at government level.

There is no problem obtaining visas at land borders, but the cost varies on the nationality.
