Thank you, Matthew, for this excellent post on the pros and cons of the western Lake Turkana route. I have only done the eastern Lake Turkana - three times over the years (first time in 1978 and last time in 2014). In the past, the whole of the former Northern Frontier District was a restricted area and one had to get permission to travel to these remote areas - hence the reason us Kenyans couldn't go north of Maralal and/or Marich prior to the late 1970s. It still remains a hard, remote area and one should be ready and prepared for all eventualities.
