    Default Undecided Next Buy

I am a young guy, who is looking to buy my first SUV vehicle. My Budget is R120 000 so this leaves me with secondhand options, I am looking to buy cash upfront so NO finance.

From my research I am looking at the following Vehicles :

    • Hyundai Tuscon V6 4WD
    • Kia Sportage 4x4
    • Honda CRV (around the DR5 range)
    • Nissan X-Trail (4x4 if possible)

I am not looking to by a vehicle that has done more than 2000Ks a month so for the price range I am looking at around 2008 models and nothing more than about 160 000Ks on the clock.

My thoughts on a SUV is that I enjoy camping and would like something that has some clearance and takes dirt roads easy, I am not at this staging going to be going serious off road but 4x4 or 4WD is bonus, however I am from Zimbabwe and driving in the streets of Harare is pretty much off road LOL

I currently own a C180 Merc 2001 model which is a dream, the services are a bit pricey around about R4000 and the fuel is a DREAM 11l/100KM (i think),
I do say a DREAM as the car I owned before this was a 1994 Nissan Skyline R33 which fuel consumption was around 7KM/liter, services weren't has heavy as the Merc.

The reason I give this bit of information is that the SUV I buy I would like to have around the same consumption as the Merc if not better, and service wise I am ok with around R4000.

So now I would like some help from anyone out there, I need any advice, thoughts, experience and knowledge from anyone please..

If you can find a decent Freelander 2 for R120K you will have the best softroader of the lot.

    x-trail or CRV...no question.
The Tucson is also pretty reliable but if the 2lt is so heavy on juice i shudder to think how the v6 will be

    Petrol or Diesel?

Oh wait, 11L/100km means no petrol models.

So Tucson V6 is out, Sportage is out.

    X-Trails are nice cars.

To be honest, scour around for a Gen 3 DiD Pajero, even if older. As long as it has a service history, the 3.2 DiD motors are notoriously reliable

Get a proper 4x4 now rather, like a Paj or similar.

Then he should buy a proper 4x4 like a Defender or a Wrangler

Disco 2 TD5 will work, but I doubt he'll find that mileage.

    +1

I recently bought a 2002 DiD inside your budget. Best buy I've made. Just did a 5000 km round trip from Cape Town taking in Mozambique and Lesotho with fuel consumption around 11l/110kms

Thanks alot so far, Still very new to this site so working my way around, in responce to everyone so far :

Johan - I was advised against the Freelander 2 or any Land Rover infact, as I have heard they can cost money in the long run, this however was coming from Land Cruiser Lovers

Mr G - I like the xTrail more than the CRV the new CRV the DR11 and up are nice but cant find it in my price range. Did not know the Tucson was heavy on fuel, Thank You

jelo - I have heard Diesel is the way to go, I have not owned a Diesel before, but when it comes down to it I am not fussy, as long as FUEL is available (Zim talk) and consumption is still good I can swing both ways.

pblaauw - I will look around for the Pajero 3.2 DiD, had a quick look on gumtree (don't judge, where else can i look?) and nothing available in price range

XJ Junkie - Had a 2 friends who had a Foresters and both had endless problems, that's why i did not consider it YET.

willben & jelo - proper 4x4 would be first prize but when I was doing my research I could not find many in price range, Will keep looking not that i got all this info.

Reef - I will have a look at the Diahatsu Terios, I should have also mentioned that I need to consider weather parts are easily available outside of SA, and I am not 100% sure about Diahatsu and Hyundai in Zimbabwe.. Izuzu D/Cab is my dream but I like the 2012 - 2013 model where they started to bring in the Chrome Door Handles (Isuzu KB250 4x4 for the win)

planeJain - sounds amazing, will keep an eye out, Don't you wanna sell yours :P how was the trip??

If you have a Job and all, maybe have a look at finance as an option and invest the R120 000 into something that can grow.

A vehicle is a depreciating asset, unless you have lots of cash, id suggest you invest your cash and finance the vehicle.

The Honda CRV has the best reliability, but the Kia, would probably be my choice out of your list.

I wish I could, I am a Zimbabwean and my work permit expires next year, I will be looking to extend it but with Home Affairs who knows, so I am actually not aloud to finance a vehicle or a house until I am permanent resident. which hopefully be in 2 and a bit years.
